Default eBay sale what to do...

Thought I should consult the 'SN' oracle on this one

Just sold a portable DVD player on ebay, it worked ok as far as I knew, however the guy who has bought it says it wont play 'some' DVD+R and R2 discs and wants a refund. Now I know I am under no obligation to give a refund but at the same time if it is true I dont want to con anyone either. As far as I was aware it worked fine but to be honest I didnt try every single combination of DVD in it.

Not sure what to do for the best, any ideas?

Cheers

Jamo,

Here is the link http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...e=STRK:MESO:IT

and here is what the guy has said:

Hi, I'm sorry but the DVD player I bought doesn't work correctly. It will not play DVD-r or DVD+r or even original DVD region 2 disks however it strangely play some dvd's and some cd's. I know the disks all work in other dvd players so the MPman DVL7 must be faulty. I would like a refund and I can take the DVD player to you as I live close to Bedfordshire. Please let me know when I can come and see you to sort this out. Many thanks.

here is does say: Play multiple disc formats (DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R/RW). he did state he tried +r so check to see wether its just +r?

but then again, whose to say his discs dont work?

did you try it (honestly) before you sent it with these discs?

id suggest giving him the refund and take the hit personally, as he and you both have 100% feedback, im sure you would like to keep it that way?

ive had a few eejits leave negs on mine, i wasnt happy!!!

down to you of course?

jamo

well he wants to actually meet to sort out the refund so Id get the goods back and take it on the chin. you'll have only lost the £6 postage. you can resell it if its just this guy being funny... Akward 1. yes it says it plays DVD-R's but it doesnt say what data it'll play, maybe hes trying to play a DVD-R with a few AVI files on it which aint compatible..... depends how funny you want to be with him really

Can you agree to try some disks when you meet up just to make sure he ain't pulling a fast one? If it doesn't play all the disks it is supposed to, then I can see his reasons for wanting a refund. If he's trying with incompatible media, then it's his problem.

The originals might be more of an issue though. Take a handful of yours along and see if they all play.

Get him to bring along the disks he says it won't play. Find out which titles they are, and if you have them, bring them along aswell.

Remember though that there are some disks out there with special branching modes etc that some players have trouble with.

DVD incompatability is not unknown. I have a set of Bandai DVDs that will not play in most Pioneer players, some Sony's and Toshes or any PlayStation 2.
How ironic that the disc in question is a series originally targetted at computer gamers.
Was the player originally Region 2 or has it it been chipped? Perhaps the discs in question have RCE?

You set the condition/status as NEW. So surely if this is brand new it will have a warranty?

Matt,

I bought it as part of a job lot of liquidated stock from a 'real' auction and with any auction its 'caveat emptor'! (buyer beware) so although its new there is no warranty but hey thats the chance you take. Im gonna refund his money and as dave says it might just him being very picky and I could once ive tested it more re-sell it.

Course you should. Would you buy goods and not expect a FULL refund including postage costs because the item was defective.

Guess so goona but most of the stuff you buy on the web if you want a refund its normally the price of item and it normally costs *you* to send it back too.

I will refund the lot though.

Cool

Did you have a note of the serial number? If so, make a note of it and check it matches up to the one he is trying to give back.

It's probably just a dodgy player, or brand compatability, but you never know.......

If the buyer is coming to your address why not ask him to bring a selection of the dvds that aren't working? He may be bluffing in which case he may forget about it. If he brings the dvds, fine, you can be relatively sure he at the very least thinks he's right.
