Take it out along with the audio front panel and PDA GPS. And if leaving the car for some time (day or more or overnight) put the dash bracket (RA classic) in the glove box or take it as well. And yes it's all a pain. But I have to park in the street.
PS I use an old bank cash bag to carry it all.

No the RA and audio front just won't fit with the wallets and mobile as well.

Might be, but not by much looking at them. Think it's wider where as the classic is longer.

when i drop it i sounds like there is not much in the unit, with todays technology you would think it would be as small as a phone

Isn't the requirement for the use of both hands the norm?

When I first got mine I used to hide it all the time in the glovebox....but after a few months I would mostly leave it in the car at night, but it was off street.
....If I parked in a car park and would be gone for a while, or other shady type places I would hide it. I would leave it in the house when I went on holiday.
I don't think RA's are very nicked because I doubt many chavs would know what it was...probably think it was the air con control or something
