Are you honest with your insurance company over car mods?
I wondered today as I spotted a BMW of some sort with a ridiculous load of modifications to it and pondered the legality of their road use? The driver did look about 13 yrs old, so I know that even changing simple things like wheels and exhaust can be a dramatic % difference to insurance.
My query is simple.
Modifications - does everyone declare their mods to the insurance company or not?
On considering some of my previous cars - I've had a mix of both where I have been honest, and others where I haven't. I resent paying extra for alloys or a spoiler, however for uprated performance bits I declared without any sweat.
.............if anyone is wondering, I'm totally legit at the moment

When i had the scoob i had a different backbox on, which didn't provide performance increase - proven by Rolling Road. No point declaring it. I also had P1 alloys - Subaru alloys so didnt bother declaring.
My new car is totally standard at the mo

Adding to what Sidhead said, it's worth the risk not declaring mods, considering things like a different backbox can add £200 to your (already sky high) premium!!!!
And the government wonder why there are 1.25 million uninsured drivers!!! (And I know not all of them have mods on Scoobys )

mines insured as a 2.0gl, I told them at the time it was a wrx, he in turn told his manager, who said what does it say on the log book, i said a 2.0gl (which it does) he said ile put a note on your account stating that, but for the purpose of your insurance premium it will stand as a 2.0gl, I got him to confirm on the docs I told him it was a wrx, which he did. anyone else had similar things like this with imports?

ALWAYS declare them - in my experience BB/ECU/wheels/brakes havent even affected the premium. Not declaring them will however affect a claim - think like a 40yr old wise man not a 20yr old chancer [and there speaks 'i know better now' experience ]

Churchill want £259 for a non-performance-increasing stainless backbox.
I'm going to wait until next year and tell them to shove their police up their rectum after the hassle they've given me currently.

Have declared "mods" on both my cars, even the ones that don't improve performance.... Even fitting a front splitter on the MGF, caused a £50 increase in premium, from one company I was with once.

My current car has alloys on which might not be standard but I dont really know so not declared.
My last car had a back box which someone had fitted which was clearly not standard so I declared that.
I've heard a story like Sidhead where someone had non standard alloys and had to pay extra excess when claiming.
If I modified a car myself which is unlikely then I would declare the changes.
