A telescope.
(An 11" Celestron GPS computer controlled scope to be precise )
Took the moon pic with my EOS 10D (got an eos adapter for the scope, so it attaches to the camera in the same way the ef lenses do, in effect becoming a big zoom lense).
I took the saturn pic using a web cam, took around 1500 frames of video, then averaged them out using a nifty bit of compter software to produce the final image. I reckon I could get a lot better, but it was cold and I had work in the morning so packed up for the night...

Looking at Saturn through my telescope never ceases to blow my mind, it really is the coolest thing not in the world

It certainly is scoobychick. I managed to see the Cassini division, and rings around the plant very clearly last night (the pic I took doesn't do it justice). Just hope I don't have to wait another 3 months before I get a clear sky again in Swindon....
Nearly getting to the time of year that Jupiter is going to be showing it's head as well. Can't wait to try and get a pic of that
That's a nice pic btw PG. Very impressive for hand held...
p.s. here's another of the moon, a little closer in...

As seen through a telescope, ie. the wrong way up.

In fact you're looking at the upper-east side of the moon. Mare Undarum to be precise
I've got a Schmidt Cassegrain scope (http://www.celestron.com/prod_pgs/tel/nx11gps.htm). The design of them basically means that when you look through them, the image is the same way up as it is when you look at it the sky with your eyes. You only get the backwards / upside down thing with refractors (and I think reflectors - but I may be wrong there)...

Blimey, that must have been a long exposure. Didn't you get arm ache holding the phone up all night...
(p.s. at the moment Neptune disappears under the horizon at around 5pm, and is right next to the sun, so I think you may be cheating )

Not being into Astromonemy and knowing very little about the subject of telescopes ect, what size of telescope would you need to be able to view the Appollo landing sites and all the junk the americans left behind if at all possible?

I think you may even need a bigger one that that to be able to resolve down to the level of detail you'd need to see that...
