LOTR, WHY did they do it?????
Just got round to watching the three DVDs one after another, first time I've seen it, (yeah, I know )
WTF?????????
WHY do film makers think that they can rewrite a classic like this? And just to get WOMEN a bigger part?
Absolutely sickening!

Read the book 7 times since I was a kid: - fantastic.
Always hoped that technology would allow a film to be made of the book and I thought the trilogy was wonderful and quite close to most aspects of the book. Watched the films again recently on my plasma and still loved them.

Nice to see 5 years of effort by Peter Jackson summed up in 3 words by Tiggs
I've got the extended DVDs and I thought they were stunning. I read the book many years ago and as far as I can remember, the films remained pretty faithfull. Yes, it is a modern interpretation, so there are some differences, but I think Jackson did a fabulous job.

Too long and drawn out. 10 hours long but could be 2.5 probably.
I just wanted it to end, but felt obliged to watch last one anyway as I had already comitted so much time to the first two. In fairness some effects were good but each to their own. Overall not impressed and not worth 10 hours. Sorry.

I enjoyed the films, thought they were well made.
Oh, and featured Liv Tyler
Only ever got about 30 pages into the first book before I gave up though (many years ago). Must go back and start again.
John.

Better get my flame suit as I prefer the films to the books, but I can see die-hard fans of the book aren't always that happy with the films, but some of the changes made were for the better IMHO.
Parts of the book are as dull as dishwater, it really shows that Tolkien had no idea where the story was going in the beginning, no wonder he stopped writing for years and that it eventually took 13 years from start to finish.

Peter Jackson's doing a remake of King Kong at the moment - He said he's interested in doing the Hobbit but getting the rights to it has proven to be tricky - and I'm sure it'll be even worse due to the success of the LOTR trilogy.

who are the contenders?
dont tell me Jerry Bruckheimer is trying to get his mits on it? queue lots of explosions, the dragon terrorises middle manhatten but luckily a wizard convention is been held there - plenty of opportunities to use their staffs of certain doom & potions of explodability

being a tolkien fan i thought the screenplay by jackson, walsh and bayans was ok. missed out on a couple of chapters, tom bombadil, scouring of the shire(including the proper death of sauruman), and spent an inordinent amount of time on Helm's Deep which is only one chapter in the book. the womens roles was also a bone of contention with me as certain characters while necessary for the plot didnt actually do much, Arwen being point in fact. have to say that i would tend to read LOTR at least once a year, but the other books edited by Chris Tolkien are much more interesting including the silmarillion and the 12 volumes of the History of Middle Earth. I always seem to get something new out of the books when i read them again even small insignificant thing. .

honesty...its my only excuse.
OK*puts nerd hat on* I've read the damn things toooooo many times and love the books. Films were OK but missed the whole point of the books; the beginning of the Man's Age and the passing of the elves and power of the rings. That was the reason the elves weren’t at Helm's Deep in the books and Rivendell's power was fading (with the passing of the rings power). So basically they made a mockery of Tolkiens’ whole story and really should have been called "Lets make a **** load of MONEY of the back of some incredible Literature that reeeaally we know we can't do Justice (parts I, II & III)". *takes hat off*
Sorry had to do it

One of the main gripes with Return of the King is that the ending is too long and drawn out - The Scouring of the Shire would have made this even worse and to be honest I had worried that the SE DVD would have had it in - glad it wasn't.

The love story between aragorn and arwen is acutally in the book if you read the appendix
Was a bit pissed of wityh the 1st one where arwen saves Frodo at the river, should have followed the book with gandalf and glorfindel saving Frodo
Was over the moon they didnt inlcuded tom bombardil, seemd to be a pretty pointless part of the book.
The really should have included the scouring of the shire, and explained the reason for leaving on the boat at the end.
Over all though the book is far better than the films, at least you get to excercise your grey matter with a book rather than veg in a chair.
