Start with local records of births, marriages and deaths if you don't know when the person died or where they died. Find a death certificate first as this will tell you the date and place of death - this should provide an indication of where they may be buried. You can order a death certificate personally from the Family Records Centre (website: http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/default.htm) or you can buy one online from the General Register Office (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/).

If you know where and when the person died you could perhaps skip the death register process and move straight onto the burial registers. Depending on when the person died they will either be buried in a local church or a municipal cemetery (from 1850 onwards in towns and cities). For churchyard burials, the burial registers will usually be found either at the church or more likely in a local record office. For municipal cemeteries and crematoria, most of the registers will be held by the municipal authority who will search for a specific entry. There may be a charge for this service and usually you will be expected to know the date of death. The registers may not be at the cemetery to which they relate. You may have to telephone around to find the ones you want. Some, for closed cemeteries, may be deposited in record offices. The records of private cemeteries, many of which are now closed, may be found in local record offices. Records of private crematoria which are still in operation will be held by the appropriate company.

Hope this helps Julian.
