As ozzy says. Concept is the way to go. Maybe you could pick up a Concept II s/h, eBay maybe. There's also a rower that uses a blade in water... WaterRower bit pricey tho'

You get what you pay for. Concepts will do millions of metres without much attention and are very strong.

Our Concept has done (only) 200,000 metres since we got it in October and it's just like the day we bought it.

As they are the most popular model in gyms, you can also take your own memory card from the one at home anfd add to it at the gym (we don't)

Secondhand Model D concepts go for £100-£150 less than retail, so if you can stretch to a new one, you'll not lose much even if you decide you can't get on with a rowing machine in the long term

One on eBay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...sPageName=WDVW

At least it shows the resale value of these.

I've used loads of rowers in various gyms over the years and none have come close to getting a workout than a concept. Really depends how serious you are and how fit you want to get.

A pair of £60 running shoes would do just as good a job.

Concept II is really the only one worth considering.
If you're on a very limited budget you might be able to find an old Model B, but they are pretty rough and noisy compared to the Model Cs and Ds. IMHO it's probably not worth going for a D unless you've got cash to spare.

Don't even consider wasting money on "rowers" especially if they are sprung or have that dreadful hydraulic resistance.

You can lease Concept IIs from Concept if you want to see how often you'd really use it enough to warrant buying one yourself.

The other thing with the Concept2 is the online community and online performance stats.

ie, you can see exactly how other people are performing, and what times they are doing for 500m splits, 2k, 5k, 10k, etc.

Might not seem a big deal, but it's a great motivator.

The C2 really is the daddy; it is the complete package. Well worth every penny.

Another vote for the Concept 2, i bought a new model D a few months ago.

It's a lot of money, but you get what you pay for and i reckon it'll outlast me. If it helps keep me fit and stops me dropping dead of a heart attack then it's well worth the money.

Note to self, must use it more in 2005...
