Default biltong

I had some of this when I was in SA years ago, never found anywhere in the UK that had the same taste.

GF has just bought me some for early xmas prezzy from these guys.

Tastes just like the real thing. Highly recommend them, if you like Biltong.

There's a great South African butcher in Edinburgh, does mail order.

Had the biltong and droewors from there, both excellent.

Needs a better website though, that pic of the boerwors looks like a plastic comedy turd!

I ordered some from those guys a few weeks back, 1kg of beef and 1kg of Springbok. Mmmm, bit of an acquired tasted though if you're not used to it.

There is a biltong/SA supplier in Guildford now as well - at the junction of Aldershot Rd/Worplesdon Road if anyone is in the area & interested.

I can also recommend South African boerewors sausage. It comes all curled up like a turd but barbequed its lush!

Question

Yummm

Does anyone know the rules about bringing biltong into the UK from SA, as in personal use/gifts in your luggage? Is it classed as a banned import, or just restricted to value/weight?

Friend of mine came back from SA recently, she bought me some back mmmm, yum it was!

Can't understand why they have banned it, she brings it back I open the sealed bag and eat it all. Not like i'm gonna waste it chucking it around some farm yard!

It's similar in concept to Jerky but quite different in taste. American beef jerky is very different to proper biltong, much softer texture and less flavour.

Jerky looks like sliced meat, When i unwrapped my biltong i thought they'd sent me bits of a 2000 year old egyptian mummy - it was almost black!

It's illegal to import beef to the UK if it's uncooked as there's a risk of bringing in foot & mouth etc, unless the meat supplier has a licence to export to the UK. www.biltong.co.uk make their beef biltong in the UK from Aberdeen Angus beef, i think they're allowed to import raw springbok/kudu etc though.

Harrods stock Biltong albeit overpriced. My local deli in Herts also stocks it. I can't stand the stuff but my wife loves it (as do the cats!)

Have been to this place and it's a fab little shop run by a really friendly bloke! They seem to have everything South African - wine, food, snacks etc etc etc. They have cheapy wines all the way up to really posh ones. (Website wasn't responding earlier - but then neither was SN - usually fint though!)
