Yes it has to be done! And a carrot for Rudolph!
My parents always did it (from what I can remember) and I stayed up listening for him. I never heard them go downstairs and assumed that in the morning when I saw the cookie milk and carrot gone (I looked for these before the presents) that it was definate he had been.
It was then I discovered they actually ate the cookie and drank the milk before they went to bed that my whole world fall apart
My friend was listening to Margherita <sp?> Taylor on Capital F.M a few weeks ago (during the day) and she said (while they had the kids in the car and with the stereo right up) "At what time do you tell the kids that Santa is not real" They all started boo'ing! She has not replied or apolgised to the email he sent her complaning about it! Stoopid Cow

I've told my daughter (4yrs old) that "Santa" will be quite happy with some of Daddie's Remy Martin congnac and some Chocolate roulade (swiss roll!!)
She's seems quite happy about that.
The carrot will be left out for Rudolph

I used to leave out a mince pie and some milk for Santa. Then I grew up, and in my mid preteen years was an evil kid. I'd had a conversation with a kid at school, about Santa being real. So I set a little trap to see if it was my parents a trip wire at anckle level, right at the top of the stairs, from that night on I knew...
So be warned any parents out there, kids have ways finding out

Always go around to a friends house on Xmas Eve. Once their kids have gone to bed they put out a mince pie, glass of sherry and a carrot. I usually end up eating the pie (but make sure I leave crumbs), and take a couple of bites out of the side of the carrot. Someone else drinks the sherry (I can't stand the stuff).
In the morning it looks like Santa has been. kids especially like the story that Rudolf can't eat the whole carrot otherwise he would be huge and couldn't fly.

another vote for the footprints
as a youngster I once woke to find sooty footprints on the fireplace. Although if you don't have a chimney and a fireplace you may be snookered.
BTW how does Santa gain entry these days if you don't have a chimney, as most new houses dont?
