The average American consumes over 28 pounds of bananas each year. - Wow, I've always wanted to know that! I'll now die a happy man.

Did you know that the 'smell' of Bananas is the gas that they give off? (obviously!) but that gas is responsible for ripening bananas.
So anytime you put Bananas together, regardless of where, they will ripen.
Also that Bananas enter the UK as barely formed, tiny little, dark green, little bananas? They are then put into large fridges, in the dark, and fed loads of that synthesised Banana gas that I mentioned before (forgotten the name)
THAT is how they are ripened commercially in this country.
Well thats how it was done about fifteen years ago when I worked with Bananas!
