I'll second Prague.

Beautiful city, cheap food & drink - expensive hotels.

Prague is an amazing city. I wanted to return there as soon as I got home and very few places have had that level of influence on me!

Hotels there can be expensive! It's worth searching the net for apartments, lots of Czech people rent apartments out. We found one on the net for about £12.50 a night per person and took the risk of booking it on the basis that the photos looked okay online (!). When we arrived the apartment was spotless, we couldn't really fault it. It was basic and didn't have the luxuries of a hotel but we weren't arsed about watching television or having breakfast in bed, we just wanted somewhere to crash for the night. We're going back to Prague next May and have booked another apartment on the net, the Czech man who owns it has been incredibly helpful and is even picking us up and dropping us off at the airport.

I'll agree about the apartments, but you often have to book a long way in advance & they tend to be a little way out of the centre of things. I stayed here: http://www.abaka.com/Czech/Dientzenhofer/ & I highly recommend the place. It's privately owned, very clean & very close to Charles bridge. The owner collected & dropped me at the airport.
