Labour charges
Do dealers just pluck these figures out of the air or what?
Took the Saxo for an estimate for a clutch and thrust-bearing today. Visited the local Citroen dealership and sat for an hour while they fannied with the car and came to the same conclusion I had in about 2 minutes:
"Yes sir, the clutch is starting to slip and the thrust bearing is wearing out. That will be the noise when you lift off the pedal."
Gee thanks, I told you that when I came in.. Anyway, fair enough, they were thorough and I was polite, then they gave me the quote:
"£150+vat for a clutch kit, £10+vat for hydraulic oil, £5+vat for the seals plus labour...", receptionist opens book and scans down list to Saxo VTS - 3.5hrs, "£252+vat for the labour..", polite smile
I told her I'd phone back and book and hastily made my escape before they decided to charge for the inspection...
One phone call to a clutch specialist.. "Saxo VTS sir? £160+vat for the clutch kit, oil and seals, £94+vat for labour. It'll take us a morning though."
Booked in next friday
My question is, how the hell can a dealership justify £72 an hour for a 'technician' on minimum wage to change a clutch?
