first electric guitar for a 9 yr old

Squier Strat should do (around £90 - add another £40 for a practice amp) - If he prefers les paul shaped, then epiphone should do.
Would recommend going to a local music store, as you really need to try the guitars out before you buy (as some will fell more "comfortable" than others)

Anything that feels "right". Thin, shallow neck. Light strings to start.
My first "lecky" was a Jackson!! Was far too good for me plus the neck was very deep. Got rid for a Les Paul Epiphone. Very nice bit of kit.
So, I'd say a strat copy. Squire/Hohner etc etc. Buy used as well, get them dirt cheap.

2nd vote for yamaha pacific. No problems with ours apart from a loose connection to switch easily repaired.
Comes with amp and lead too.
Bought my son one 3 years ago and he is still playing/taking lessons (now age 12).

Another one for Yamaha Pacifica.
Squire Strats are very overrated IMO.
Most music shops will do a beginners package with a little amp for £150-£200
Make sure you start him off with very light strings (ask for 9's or 8's at the local music store). And make sure they give you a guitar with a low/adjustable action (this is the distance of the strings from the fretboard - the closer they are the easier it is to play).
Get him guitar lessons with someone that will teach him to actually play some songs. If he lands up with a guitar teacher that just wants to teach him to read music he'll lose interest very quickly.
Invest in a guitar tuner aswell!! It'll make it easier on you in the long run!

Surely there are enough kids who started and gave up soon after, so I dare say there will be a few on ebay being sold by annoyed parents!!!

I bought a Squier Strat and played it about 4 or 5 times before getting bored and putting it up the attic , I bought it as a kit with the amp and lead , then bought a bag and tuner , Cd's to learn ect , you can have it all for £100 if your interested , I'll never use it again...

Have a look around this place Regent Guitars and look especially for the Cort and Vintage ranges. This is a proper guitar shop and wont sell you a plank of wood with some strings attached (that would be an encore ).
I honestly couldnt recommend this store enough.

I used to have an Ibanez RG550 (in luminous yellow) many years ago before i built my own custom strat.

its not so much the money tbh,he has 2 lessons a week and works hard, classical lessons in the evening and a fun lesson at school,so he is seriously interested enough to get a decent guitar, and the granny is paying anyway
