I hate junkmail, but every now and then you get a gem in your inbox.

This one made me laugh my *** off for some reason. Do you have any classics?

BTW You should be careful reading them incase they contain inline images originating from a spammers site. If your mail client displays the images they can tell from their logs that you have received the email and that your address is valid!

Usually they get the IP address of the ISP's proxy and only a couple of hits subsequently

Nothing to do with your IP, what they can do is customise the URL of the image in the mail sent to you.

for example they send an email to john.smith@blah.com with an image coming from something like http://www.spammer.com/12312uniquecode123123.jpg or http://www.spammer.com/getimage?john.smith@blah.com.jpg

The webserver logs the request, matches it with the email address and then your email address is toast for ever.

good points. Most of my Spam is filtered, but the ocasional text based spam can make it through.

The simple solution is don't use Outlook :P
I used to say that any HTML email will not contain anything useful but unfortunately losts of companies have started using it,often without a text-only version.

My mum has a horse stable and yard she wanted to rent out, so she put an advert on www.newrider.com advertising both.
