Default Fire Safety - Rental Accommodation

Whats the position if you rent out a flat re fire safety?

Do Fire Prevention Officers cost much to come round and take a butchers?

You only need to strictly adhere to fire safety regs if it is considered a HMO (home of multiple occupation). How this is defined is down to your local council.

In Edinburgh, this is now any rented accomodation with 3 unrelated tenants. If this is the case, you need fire doors, smoke alarms, and all that goes with it.

If you don't fall into this category and are renting out to 1 person, you just need to ensure you have gas & elec checks done annually, and I'd also make sure there were smoke alarms in there (and change the battery often!).

So...all depends on the size/type of property you are renting, and also your local authority rules.

Cool, we were going to remind the tenant monthly to test / change the smoke alarm batteries!
