our tax system explained....
I read this the other day......
"Suppose, every evening, 10 men go out for dinner. The bill for all 10 comes to £100.
They decide to split it the way we pay our taxes, as follows:
The first 4 men (the poorest) paid nothing
The fifth man paid £1
The sixth £3
The seventh £7
The eighth £12
The ninth £18
The tenth (richest) £59
All 10 were quite happy with the arrangement, until one day the restaurant owner said, ”Since you are all such good customers, I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by £20”
So now dinner only costs £80.
The group still want to pay their bill by the same calculation method.
The first 4 are unaffected, they still eat for free. The remainder have to divvy up the £20.
20 divided by 3 = £3.33, so they couldn’t subtract that from each person because 5 and 6 would be paid to eat. It was suggested that each man’s bill should be reduced by roughly the same percentage.
The fifth man now paid £0 – 100% saving
The sixth £2 – 33% saving
The seventh £5 – 28% saving
The eighth £9 – 25% saving
The ninth £14 – 22% saving
The tenth (richest) £49 – 16% saving
Each of the 6 were better off and the 4 still ate for free. But outside the restaurant the men began to compare their savings.
“I only got £1 out of the £20 said number 6” and pointed to number 10 “ he got £10”.
“That’s right” said number 5 “I only saved £1 too, it’s not fair that he got 10 times more than me”
“That’s right said number 7, “why should he get £10 when I only got £2? The rich get all the luck!”
The first 4 then said “Wait a minute, we didn’t get anything. This system exploits the poor”
The 9 men then turned on number 10 and beat him up.
The next night number 10 didn’t come to dinner. The 9 sat down and ate without him, but when the bill came, they didn’t have enough money between them to even pay for half of it.
That’s how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the biggest savings from tax reductions. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy and they just might not show up at the table any more."
..the other outcome is if you reduce the bill by £10 the quality of the meal go's down, the guy who's at the top can spend his savings on "extra's",something those at the bottom cant. Its not just about savings, its also about the quality of the service.

The weather rules out the IOM - I don't think I am missing the point, though. The above is a silly analogy made for Americans who actually beleive it's unfair when a tax cut saves a high earning person more money, something I've never actually heard an Englishman say (probably because our tax only ever goes up, lol). It's aimed squarely at those who belive the rich should be taxed harder. i.e. it's aimed at the "hard of understanding", all IMHO, of course.
