Red face Local Government & School Jobs = really cr*p wages........

I have been looking around for an easier life - I currently work in IT as a PC Support Engineer for 200+ users, all the usual ****, - have a 45 min commute every day, my company is about to relocate to 1.5hrs min commute each way so been looking around - have seen a few jobs in my home town (small market town) at the schools, council etc, except they all pay REALLY **** wages.....

The one in last nights paper that really took my fancy was the local school ICT Technician, looking after all the IT kit in the school, NT, Office easy stuff, Term Time Only, 25hrs a week

Perfect job - no stress, short hours, walk to work, see much more of my young family, but the wages - OMG!

They were advertised as APT & C Grade 2 Point 1 - well thats fecking useful - how the **** are you suppoosed to know what that is?

Well a quick Google later - £13,500 - **** me - they want an ICT Technician for the whole school - for £13k

Now I'm lucky, got no mortgage, no debts, but **** even in the position I am in I reckon i'd struggle just to feed my family.......

But what price short working hours & happiness??

25hrs a week and, what, 12 weeks holiday a year? That's not so bad pro rata!

TBH I think you'd get bored though, you'd start to want challenges that they wouldn't give you.

OTOH, would you be pleased if your taxes were raised to pay all civil servants a private sector salary?

You could go for it and get another job too, part time. But yeah, crap wages nonetheless.

Looking after School ICT is probably very stressfull.

Endless amounts of little gits trying to hack everything. I've heard of schools having to glue the covers over mouse ***** shut as the kids kept filthing the *****....

My Bro works for a company who supply and install networks and computers to Schools in the north west. He's been approached by schools and offererd a very max of 19k (big technology school thing) - but the hols dont always apply - you're in over term times to oversee upgrades etc - and for the money a lot rests on your shoulders if things go wrong...
Its a bit off TBH - and probably the same country wide - My best mate is a bigwig at a north west IT recruitment company - if you want a contact number, pm me

Public sector pay is crappy, until you're the boss, plenty of local authority CEO's and finance directors on £100K plus....

Question

DrHu: my two penn'orth:

Pro's:
*Short hours,
*long hols,
*LOADS of kids who will be glad of the help of someone who knows the stuff inside out, (they get VERY frustrated with the technology in schools as it's often inferior to what they have at home, and anyone who can keep it up and running for them and sort out their probs, will be superstar status in short order!!!)
*Ditto above for many many staff too!
* working with kids can be VERY rewarding.

Con's:
*Working with old technology and short of money can be very frustrating.
* Working with kids can be as above
*Working with teachers, ditto!!!!!!!!
*Not brilliant wages,

Have you thought that you could set up on your own in your spare time, mending and doing the same job as in school for home computers?

Surely some mistake here? According to Mein Kampf, sorry, the Daily Mail, everyone who works for the government is overpaid?

I just remembered: a friend of mine does IT support in a catholic girl's school - if that's not a perfect job I don't know what is....
