Victim of card fraud :(
My debit card has, I assume, been cloned.
So some ****** has spend a few hundred pounds courtesy of Dracs bank account.
Card got rejected at petrol station and supermarket so I phoned up LloydsTSB to find out what's going on. As a security question I got asked how much a recent transaction was for (debit to T-Mobile). I couldn't answer as I don't have anything to do with T-Mobile Went online to check my account and there was a number of £100 transactions to T-Mobile (and some other spurious transactions) so phoned back and have card cancelled.
Thing is, my card is only a few weeks old and I've hardly used it, so very few oportunitites for anyone to get the details. I'm always cautious when inserting into ATM (make sure there's no dodgy card reader there etc.), I always have my wallet on me etc. so I am at a loss to figure out how they got it, maybe at some stage when it was in the post a few weeks ago. Who knows eh!
Given how careful I am with my cards, this is a worrying situation as it really does mean that it can happen to anyone, no matter how careful you are. Similar thing happened to my ex-girlfriend a year ago who was as careful as me with cards etc.
Got to phone the banks fraud dept tomorrow when they open to sort it all out. I assume I get all the money back (can anyone confirm) as this is standard practice these days.
Happened to anyone else here? Keep checking your account statements is all I can say!!

I know loads of people who've been a victim of fraud - one of my uni mates got whacked for 800quid - and it took the bank ages to check it out, and agree it was fraud (so he was refunded in the end)
The bank should refund any lost money.

My company Visa card was done last month. Went to check it against my expenses and lo and behold, an extra £1250 had been spent by someone Waiting for Company Barclaycard to investigate.

It is a chip and pin card (just got the thing) but not needed to use it in that way yet as far as I can remember.
Some credit to LloydsTSB though. They put a security check on the card (so it can't be used) on the day that the transaction took place so only a few hundred gone, nearly all to t-mobile and one to cd-wow (which looks like it's been put straight back into my a/c so maybe that was something else that got refunded - I didn't buy anything from cd-wow btw).

Must be a right tw@t, especially the embarrassement of being declined at a petrol station. You cant exactly give the petrol back.
On the other hand no one would clone my card because the max they would get is like 20p or so (light humour to lift the mood, but true )

Several of the banks are quite hot on the fraud now. I had an HSBC credit card cloned a while back, when I'd been staying away from home for a few days. Discovered something was wrong on the way home when it declined at a petrol station, then found messages from the bank on my home phone. Turned out someone had tried to spend over £4k on it over the previous two days, although it had been in my pocket the whole time.
Full credit to HSBC in that case - they had declined it at the first transaction - so NO money was successfully spent by the fraudster, no issue with claims etc- they just cancelled the card and got me a new one within 2 days. That sort of thing makes you a lot more tempted to stay with a provider, IMHO.

My Halifax card got done. $300 on casino informed Halifax and they looked into it, mean timeI tried to use the card and it was rejected. Some ****** in the states had tried to put $000's on it. Halifax refused the card and bloked it. YAY.
Some how they must have got my details from an online etailer. I have firewalls, anti-virus and run 3 different spyware packages.
I've not got the card unbloked or renewed, stops me using it. I have enough debts.

I had £206 taken off my EGG card by some ******, in US dollars, from a UK internet casino. That was on 24th September, and I still have'nt got it back, even though EGG admitted they know it is fraud (one thing that stood out, is that because it was a betting site, the site asked for DOB. The DOB entered was not mine!!)they have been promising it WILL be credited back to my account, I've chased them three times now, and once Monday comes, if it STILL has'nt been paid, I will be on there back again. Wait a pain in the ****.

Little while back mine was cloned and the ******* used it for mobile phone vouchers. Exactly the same thing happened at to a guy here at work and again it was mobile phone vouchers. I guess they are very easy to sell in pubs and so on. With PAYG phones it's all relatively untraceable aswell.

I bought my car on my debit card - over £10K, but the money was in there, so no worries. 2-3 weeks later, I can't buy petrol with it. Guy rings up for authorisation and says I can't use it.
I ring my bank (Barclays - well call centre anyway) and they say there's a fraud watch out on my card. I asked them why no one had contacted me to verify the transactions. He said they should have, but obviously haven't got round to it.
After 2-3 weeks I would have expected a call! Some ****** could've been having a brilliant time with the other £20 in my account!
Obviously, everyone has good and bad experiences. I hope to God that this card doesn't get cloned otherwise it will take them weeks to "get round" to finding out if it actually has been used fraudulently!

Petrol stations have a lot to answer for with regards card crime. I could count the number of times the signature on mine has been checked in the past year on one hand. They just don't give a toss.

ON the subject of card cloning.....
When you pay for petrol (and it mainly seems to be at garages) they often swipe your card twice - once on a sperate small grey card swipe slot thingy, then straight after they swipe it into the proper till - i have always wondered what the hell the first small swipe machine is used for??
They have done it for years in many many petrol stations - what is it?

I was the vistim of card fraud a few years back. I went to pay for pertrol and my card was rejected because it had expired. I thought it strange that a new card hadn't been issued so I called my bank. They had sent a new card and it had been used, just not by me. It had been intercepted in the post somehow.
The good news is they caught the person concerned !! It was used fraudulently for a couple of months so I guess there must have been some arrangement with the police to keep it "live" so they would have more chance to track them down with the card. I had to give a statement to the police saying I'd not received the card and I had to make arrangements to go to court as a witness. At the 11th hour they changed their plea to guilty so I didn't have to go.

Just spoken to fraud team at LloydsTSB and all is sorted.
Seems like most the transactions took place via telephone so someone must've got the card number somehow and have tried to make a number of purchases.
All the money taken out will be refunded within a few days thankfully.
In addition, there were a number of other attempted (but failed) transactions. Almost £1500's worth!
Keep an eye on your accounts chaps!

Slightly off topic I know, but I paid for my Sti on my card. Authorised instantly, bank didnt ask to speak to me or ask any security questions. Normally my purchases are in the 0 to £100 range so one for 26k must have stood out !

In petrol stations the first swipe on a small card reader checks to see if the card is on a blacklist and the second swipe on the normal machine is actually the transaction.

the first machine is the reader which grabs all your card details for cloning...
