Question What happens to my expenses when I submit them........?

My company sent me abroad to work recently (for 3 months). I have been submitting and gettin paid expenses for hotel, car, meals, etc..... (no loose women b4 u ask...!).

What happens once I submit then. OK I get paid, but does some pore chap have to go through each receipt looking and linking VAT numbers so that they can claim the VAT back, or do they just claim it anyway.......?! and pass the spot check audit.

I have >100 receipts ever 2 weeks, so its pretty damn hard for me to balance the books.......! How does our accounts dept do this, if 50 people are doing the same?!

Cheers,

Matt.

Hello

When I submit my expenses the nasty horrible people in accounts go through each line item, check the receipt against that item and then claim back for VAT. And hopefully pay me as well, after complaining that I spend too much money on, well, absolutely everything according to them.

To be fair (if I have to), it takes a long time to check everyones expenses, and we are externally audited to make sure that procedures are followed.

Steve.

I'm one of the poor people that has to check them

yes, we have to go through each receipt & ensure there is a VAT number on the receipt, otherwise you can not claim the VAT back.

the type of expense & amount also has to be recorded for P11D (taxable benfits) purposes - although most peoples expenses are not a taxable benefit.

some sad accountant goes through it line by line to check your receipts, vat numbers etc etc. If they don't they can claim vat etc anyway, but if they get an audit by the revenoo or the V man and there is a penny missing it all goes pear shaped. That is why accountants can't have a personality as well
