Question Mountain Bike insurance

Just bought my new bike, which would cost something in the region of £2k (possibly more) to replace if it was nicked. Therefore, I need to get some insurance cover. My current home policy is with Zurich, but even if I explicitly specify the bike on the policy, their maximum limit for pedal cycles is a grand.

The next cheapest home insurance quote for a similar policy but with a suitable limit for bike cover is with NU, but their policy would come in at something like £200 more than Zurich.

So, the question is, what are my other options? What's the likely cost of a dedicated bike insurance policy? Any other useful suggestions?

We have house insurance with the Pru, they cover our bikes for all risks for not too much, both bikes are insured for over four grand each.

Evans do bike insurance, I'm about to do the same as I don't much fancy paying out another 1.8k should I lose mine. Their policy for bikes worth >1.6k is you must have an approved lock, but I don't think you'll be locking it up outside your supermarket They sent me a pamphlet with their latest catalogue a few weeks ago.

My bike, worth £2600 is covered on our Direct Line home insurance.

It is about £50 extra and is covered by everything, theft/damage etc. but must not be raced

Oh and thats in London too

The Pru are excellent, I've got over ten grands worth of bone shakers insured on my home insurance. Individual bike insurance is a rip off, if I insured all my bikes this way the premium would be close to a grand!!! My House/Contents/Bikes comes to about £350 all in.

Hmm, I had no idea I could cover a bike under home contents, I think I will have to make a call. Cheers chaps.

Yeah, but Chris, your bike's just a £700 cheap bit of tat, not a proper bike.

You have a bike for £2000 and it doesn't even have an engine? Or is it because it's made of Ivory or something.

It's made of aluminium. No ivory - that'd weigh too much.

Well, I'm all sorted. NU do a policy with similar quality of cover to my current Zurich one, so with an excellent policy, £100k buildings' and £40k contents' insured, including the bike covered anywhere in the UK, new-for-old, to a value of £2,500. Total cost of the policy is £508.

Even better, I'll get £50 or so back from my Zurich policy, despite cancelling it with only a month to run - apparently if you cancel early because they can't actually provide the cover you need (as opposed to 'cos you've just fancied a change or got a cheaper quote) then they give you a pro-rata refund.

Nice.
