Best Plasma /LCD under 2k
A mate of mine is after a flat screen telly he wants to know what is the best plasma/ LCD her can pick up for around £2k. Ideally the bigger the better but looking for good picture quality.
I know there are a few people on here who know a fair bit about this kind of stuff so I though I would ask on here
Any suggestions? Ta

Well out of the two LCD is going to be the more expensive, £2k will get probably a decent 26" LCD or a decent 42" plasma.
I think the Panasonic TH42PWD6 is down to about £1600 online now and I know a few scoobynetters have got these screens and are dead impressed by them so that might be worth a look.
Hope this helps

I would not bother with LCD, still too expensive at the moment.. take a look at these..
1. Panasonic 42PW6 - a very good model that can be had for around £1700.
http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/sound-a...166797/details
2. Hitachi 42 PD5200 - just won the latest what plasma award for plasma under 3k. - this comes in at just under 2k.. superb price and better than some plasmas in 3k price bracket.
http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/sound-a...195400/details
3. Phillips 42PF9946 - nice unit at just under 2k
http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/sound-a...214488/details
4. Panasonic 42PW7 - next nodel upto number 1 above - superb! http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/sound-a...230328/details
Of these i would plump for the Hitachi - a good model for under 2k and an award winner.
If you can push above the 2k mark then you could look at my choice which is the hitachi model above but at 50inch.. - just ordered it for my new gaff and cant wait to watch the footy on it..:-))
good luck

i know where you can get the lg 42" plasma for £1400.
or!!!
I can sell you a very cool projector which retails at £1200, and all I want for it is £600! heres a screen shot of mine being thrown at my wall, with ps2! the one id give you is brand new unopened box, with 1 year guarentee!!!
thats 64" square!!! and thats a 2 metre throw, @ 4 metres and above your looking at a 120" square picture without loosing quality, as its 1500 ansi. bulb life is approx 3000 hours! thats an average life of 4 hours a daay for about 5 years. then you replace the bulb, (unlike plasma and tft where you have to replace the unit after about 5 - 7 years)
mail me if interested.

LG plasma's are widely regarded as cack
The Panasonic has one of the best screens for the money, very good quality, got mine a few weeks ago and its brilliant.
Its also raved by the guys on www.avforums.com and is the reason I bought it.......
Avoid the 1300-1400 quid ones.......

I can second both of these bits of information, we had an LG screen a while back and the picture quality on all sources was less than impressive.
However, I use Panasonic Viera and PW6 screens on a regular basis at work and we even have an old Panasonic PW3 in the gym at work (this is about 4 or 5 years old) and all are very impressive screens for the money.

Cheers for the advice so far
Narrowing things down a little and he is so far looking at:
Hitachi 42 PD5200 - Good reviews all over - about £1900
LG RZ 42PX11 - Nice screen and seems an improvement over LG's previous efforts. Also only £1500
PANASONIC VIERA TH-42PE30B - Nice, seems like this can be had for just over £2k but is it worth the stretch
And the other cheaper Panasonic mentioned earlier, the only thing being that these seem like they need a lot more setting up.
I never realised there were so many, and after wandering around Comet on Sunday with him there can be a massive difference in quality but in Comet you can never tell whether some fcukwit has been pissing around with the settings .
Sort of want one myself now as me & missus are moving house this week and it would look cool in the new front room... if only
Jamo, cheers for the projector suggestion, I wouldn't mind one of those myself but worried about the room always needing to be pretty dark to get a great picture. Looks very cool though! Does it do 16:9?

The panasonics are really good - just about to get one after extensive research
However I would say they are taking the pi$$ with 150 quid for a table top stand.
The best Ive seen for the 37" is 1950+stand at 150 and 1 year warranty.
But us British just a bunch of mugs... <flame-suit>on</flame-suit>

you dont have to have the room dark as its a 1500 ansi. its on low quality there, as it increases the life of the bulb.

thats not bad for saying they last 3000 hours!
if you think of it this way, after about 7 years a plasma is useless, thats it done with once its gone its gone, Ive calculated for the amount i use my projector it will last me 4 years, maybe less only just though! i paid £600 for it, a plasma is around £2000 ish. after my bulb has gone ile put another in it, and it will still be as good as it is now! and it will last another 4 years and so on, and it will still be cheaper than the plasma for the next 16 years. (ish)

Went with him last night to look at a few, compared the Panny Viera 37" to the LG PX11 42" on both DVD and Sky sources. There wasn't enough difference to warrant the extra £500 and coupled with the loss of 5 inches it looks like he will today be ordering one of the LG's from comet online. £1599 compared to £2200 in store. I've seen some terrible stuff about the old LG's but what I've seen so far has been positive.

Cool, let me know where and I'll tell him to hold on. Kelkoo showed a couple cheaper but I think its better to pay the extra £100 for a place you know you can kick up a real fuss with if there is a problem.
Cheers

Panny PWD6 is only 1599 at Richer Sounds now, much better than an LG and 42" screen instead of the 37 panny he was looking at 4000:1 contrast ratio as oppossed to 3000:1 with the LG Bigger the better!
