Default Why is our fish so fat?

This fish looks too fat. What's up with it? We only add a pinch of food once a day (for both fish in the tank). On the advice of a fish-owning mate we're gong to reduce that to feeding every other day. But what's up with this? The fish is almost round for goodness' sake! Is it going to explode?

At a rough guess I would say he has constipation, my fish had it and it upset his balance, I starved him for 5 days and all was well

Yeah try reducing the feeding a bit, chances are it will be ok.

Do keep an eye on the scales though... if they start lifting it could be a sign of dropsy, an internal gram negative bacterial infection, which isn't good.

lol... they did have some plants in there to occupy their three-second memories, but the silly sods ate them! They've got a TV (the yellow thing on the right). What more could they ask?

Thanks for the suggestions. If there's more out there - keep 'em coming.

buy the silly sods some more plants! I changed my tacky plastic plants for some real ones and in 2 weeks they had completely eaten one apparently cos it had colourful leaves! now they are slowly making their way round the others! Give em somewhere to hide aswell, you can buy bogwood from aquatics quite cheaply mine love it I have a shipwreck aswell!

OK, so we've established we can't decorate a fish tank for **** (well my g/f can't - they're her fish really! ) lol. So dropsy is the most likely cause of "inflatedfi****is"?

But cats and scoobs do mix, used to live in very quiet village, on return from work, our cat would be waiting for me at edge of village, I'd open door, he'd jump in and we'd drive the rest of the way to our home, he loved it. Think it was the purr of the engine....

Its true those type of goldfish are supposed to look very fat, but not to the extent where their scales stick out like a "fir cone". I can't see on the pictures whether this is the case or not (the top picture looks like they are but the bottom picture looks fine), but if they are sticking out then it can be a sign of dropsy as I said above.

Fatman.... feedback please! Are the scales lieing flat as they should be?

I don't recall them sticking out - certainly not significantly otherwise we'd have noticed. I'll have a closer look when I get home tonight.

The scales are, indeed, sticking out pine cone-style.
