..last night, he used a lighter and a piece of rubber to start a fire......not a flint, or 2 sticks or a stone......but a lighter.....

Stark contrast to last week, where he asked the locals to light a fire naturally - after many failed attempts he showed them his way, which worked. At first they were quite gutted and offended, but in the end were quite glad for the tips.
LOL been trading too many baskets for zippos methinks

Definately the best program on TV. And now Mapman's on before it my Thursday night TV and Beer session is complete.
Anyone else have a go at making fire after last weeks program? I couldn't do it.

all you need is two sticks - make sure one of them is a match
Can't really see the point in 'living off the fat of the land' - its going to limit dinner to a few woodlice or my neighbours dog. I prefer to phone the local curry house - might still be eating dog, but at least you don't know.
brilliant program all the same

I was a tad dissapointed with the lighter too, I was all when it popped out of his bag!
I was impressed with Mapman, especially as he went through Skipton, my local town and in the Wooley Sheep where I've consumed many a pint!

BBC Two. The lighter and inner tube were in his emergency pack. I'm sure he'd never use them unless he was either bloody freezing or desperate for a cup of tea

One of the funniest things he said once was on a programme about living of the animals and plant's found around britians coast. We has walking along the sand and rocks at low tide and pointed out a small crab trying to hide. He looked to the camera and said "It's his lucky day... I'm not hungry"....

Get real...
If your going out into the wilderness you would take suitable firelighting kit, i.e. matches or lighter, but it is worth knowing how to get one going without incase the more modern approach fails, for example because the matches have got wet.
He is a bit portly so must be very good at what he does Did see on program where he cooked a whole leg of venison, mmm could get quite fat on that diet I expect he likes a pint or two as well (upon returning from the wilderness )

Good program as ever. Don't confuse 'lard ****' with fitness. He's not the sort of toned lean fell walker, more someone who is used to living off the land. Have a look at some of the pics of the SAS teams in Andy McNab's books. Very few of the guys look toned and ultrafit - but you can bet your life they are
