The russians then opened fire on the kidnappers and then the whole thing kicked off - doesn't sound like a planned assault at all.

Sounds like they didnt have much choice - terrorists start shooting at kids who try and escape, and thats what triggered it all off. Hardly just going to sit and watch are they.

Watching the coverage this afternoon - I don't think they did have much choice. It looked like absolute chaos. Mind you they don't appear to have been very prepared - other buildings hadn't been secured (latest reports suggest that some of the terroists have got hostages in another building) and the proper special forces weren't there either.

I don't think any commander would have chosen to storm that building during daylight either. But it is very easy for us to sit here behind our computer screens thousands of miles and criticise....

Awful situation - I think the final death toll will be huge

UB - most of the population of that area are Muslim (which makes the choice of target all the stranger) - not jumping to conclusions? So far only 10 of the terroists have been identified as 'of Arab origin'

It's not what's allowed and not, it's labelling every Muslim.

If it was in Ireland, you wouldn't hear them referred to as Christian's.

Who cares what their so-called beliefs are, they don't carry any will other than their own agenda's.

There was talk about some of the released kids being covered in their own urine, etc.. so I don't think it was anything other than taking off soiled clothes.

Well bearing in mind that this all kicked off about 9:30AM local time it is possible that a lot of the kids were still asleep - there is not much else to do. It is also very hot down there - so the conditions inside that school must have been unbearable.

And the Spetznaz were supposed to be the Russian equivalent of our SAS!!! Maybe in the battlefield, not in the counter terrorist dept. Not by a long chalk. The Germans reaslized their mistake after the 1976 Munich plane disaster. The SAS now train their GSG9 units.
