Stoping my dog barking
How did you stop your dog barking when you are out. My girlfriend popped to the shop earlier this morning to do some food shopping for a few hours and the dog barked constantly our neighbour reports
The dog is with someone 99% of the time but on the odd occasion she barks constantly. I'm guessing she barks because she is bored. We have tried numerous Kong toys and have tried stuffing food and toys into the Kong's but they only keep her amused for a few minutes and then she barks again.
The Neighbours are getting a bit funny now

mine used to do this so we kicked them out of the main part of the house. they now spend 95% of their time seperate from us so they dont care/notice when we go out. they only make a fuss if they see us (via the back door) going into the fields without them.
not a plan if you like a dog to slobber over your sofa but i like my animals to keep themsleves to themselves.....i have kids to screw up the furniture

Jason,
We know she (Elle) has been mistreated and we are sure that her behaviour is related to this. I'll look into a behaviourist.

darlodge,
Try this link Jan Fennell. Not a dog owner myself, but I have heard good things about her methods.
As for the electric collar on SNetters - can we start a list of suitable candidates?

My neighbours complained about my dogs barking (not to me though ) and I had a couple of visits from the dog warden. The warden hired me a couple of special collars that were designed to stop the dogs barking, did the trick though as no more complaints.
various items are shown here

I think the ones I hired were the ABS Anti Bark Collar Kit.
I think they have banned the electric ones as these were deemed to be cruel.
Hope this helps.

An old neighbour of mine used the electric collar thing.......and all it did was make her cry when she got shocked!!! Was awful to hear, and certainly didnt do the trick!!
Id go for the behaviourist idea. If someone is with her 99% of the time, it seems strange that she barks so much in the little time she is on her own.

"fecking electric shocks and nasal sprays ... what next "
some sort of harness that yanks it up in the air when it barks and spins it round a bit? a Yanky Barky if you will.

Definately sounds like separation anxiety to me. Be very careful with things like shock collars, esp if she has had a rough past. You may stop the barking but can introduce new even more unwanted behaviour.
The normal way is to go out for say 30 seconds, come back in, ignore her for a few seconds and if she doesn't bark, make a big fuss of her and give here a treat (food, play with a toy, whatever works for your dog). Then build the times up over a few weeks.

I dont have problems with my dogs barking but i do have problems with the kids down my street shouting and screaming their heads off do you think i could fit them with the electric collars to stop the noise?
though for some reason that would be classed as cruel where an animal that your cant explain the problem to should be given electric shocks for not doing what you want!

There's a few on here would recommend shooting it!!!
Me however, I'd recommend the same kind of training you gave the dog when it was a pup and it crapped on the floor, clip on the nose and stern "No". Sounds too easy but it worked on my staffordshire bull and he's one stubborn hard ****.

my dog is mad he barks all day ***** everything in sight and eats stones. he chases bloody stones and rocks. he is now blind in one eye due to him chasing a stone into a thorn bush and a thorn got stuck in his eyeball. the only way to calm him down is to take him into a big field and train him to pick up sticks instead of stones scince doin this he is more mellow and doesnt bark as much. they just want lots of company and love and they are cool

Sorry for the people involved here, dogs bark cause they want to, no other reason, if they think it will get someones attention then they will do it. It comes from upbringing of it, i treated my dog like a baby, left it for 10 mins then came back, then 20 mins then came back, and so on, now i can leave the dog for like 5 hours and not one peep, except a cry every now and then....
If you respond to dogs in teh begining by given them something everytime they make a fuss then they will really take the p!ss.....then you get into spoilt dog syndrome..
I am not trying to slag the owners off, i am just stating what i have learnt from some really good handlers...

None of my 3 dogs has ever barked as i trained them not to. My brothers dog barks for england and when he picked him up from the kennels after his holiday the bloke commented on how he has never looked after such a noisy little **** head!! the dog even had a sore throat!! he uses citronella anti bark collar now and that stops him dead in his tracks on the first bark
