believe there is an issue with life span? maybe worth checking out.
apparantly they only last for like a few years max. which isnt really acceptable for something so expensive.
i will get more details from ones father, who backed out of buying one for that reason.

I work in the trade (Sevenoaks Sound & Vision). No real problems with lifespan, they're just a little slow (the refresh rate of each pixel, that is) so moving objects can "smear" across the picture. Sharp tell us that LCD will take over from Plasma for larger screens too, but they've got a lot of catching up to do at 40" and above. At 17", picture quality is ok though. Remember, you're paying for convenience as well as picture quality (only 3" deep!).

Paul - I would say there probably wont be any more immediate movement on that phillips screen for a while yet to be honest but I may turn out to be completely wrong!
Steve - Just out of interest, which sevenoaks store are you at?

I have had a 20 inch lcd in the bedroom for the last 8 months, its a sharp widescreen model and i am well chuffed with it.. All i can say is that they are coming down in price and well worth the investment. If you are on a budget richer sounds do the relisys 17inch widescreen model for around 350-400, ideal for a spare tv etc..

good luck

Sony do a lovely 37" LCD at £8500 - the picture has to be seen to be believed!
Anyway, the prices will always drop (and the items get better) - just look at digital cameras!!
You need to jump in at one point - and now may be as good as ever?
I have heard a story of a new technology coming out using mirrors (tiny mirrors that project the colour) - at half the price of LCD and Plasma!
I am not too sure about the reliability of that info. however - anyone heard the same??

LCD is pretty good now. My philips has a viewing angle of 170 degrees horizontal and vertical, so you can watch it at angles that really aren't practical
Refresh isn't really an issue with good ones either. If you have a 16ms refresh rate, thats enough for a 60Hz update for NTSC.
I bought mine for £2k, and would have no issues with buying what is now last years model, rather than spend extra for a bit more tech.
I'm also looking at 17" W/S for the new garage conversion - want to use it as a TV and PC monitor.

At the moment, LCD is the way forward.

plus DLP is a reflective technology, so will always need some depth. Rear projection is about as slim as it'll get (about 18inches deep). Fine for that, and for normal projectors, but not for hang on the wall.
LCD has come on leaps and bounds, and IMO is the current tech to beat. Plasma goes bigger for slightly less (although you can now get 42" LCD), but LCD is higher res.
Next big things are a couple of years away (SED/NED, OLED etc) - lots of promises, but nothing real to be seen yet.

I feel that in common with the price of LCD computer monitors Paul, the price of LCD TVs should also come down as they become more common. There are improvements being made in LCDs all the time, both in refresh speed and size of screens.
I would also like one but am going to wait for a bit to see how it all develops.

I work next door to Relisys, and have done some work for them recently
I was horrified at how much mark up is on LCD Technology (at least 60-65% pure profit)
Needless to say, Im not in any rush to buy one (unless I can get the Relisys staff discount )

I know I shouldn't encourage threads to go off track - but if you want mark up - try text messages. Each one costs the network about 0.001p to process and they charge anything from 10p upwards. Work out the margin on that (even at 2p a text.....). Then figure that there were over 50 billion texts sent last year in the UK alone

I would hold off for 3 reasons:
1: TOKYO, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Japan's Hitachi Ltd. (6501.T: Quote, Profile, Research) , Matsu****a Electric Industrial Co. (6752.T: Quote, Profile, Research) and Toshiba Corp. (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) are set to unveil later on Tuesday plans to jointly produce large liquid crystal display (LCD) panels in a venture reportedly to cost 100 billion yen ($909.5 million). source
2. There was an announcement about 4 months ago I think by LG to build 2 new factories in (IIRC) Korea specialising in flat/plasma screen technology.
3. Samsung predict flat screen prices falling by as much as 20% over Q3/4 2004 source
I'm waiting at least another 2 years before I seriously start thinking about a 42" plasma

I think prices will drop, HP announced they will start selling them in "the fall", which should provide some price pressures.

I paid £480 for a Toshiba 17" widescreen, from Costco, including 3 years warranty. It's just won an eiditors choice in Home Cinema magazine too.
Great picture, wide viewing angle and good value for money IMO.
