The 'new' D70?

I like the sound of the new 10-22mm lens

Nice looking piece of kit. But having looked at I don't think I'll be upgrading my 10D to it, not enough for me to make the switch.

One thing I have been reading about it. Only 5 RAW images in the buffer at any one time, that is a backward step from the 10D that can hold 9. If it is true (and the reviews are just coming out) then that is one thing that would stop me from buying it.

10-22mm is a nice looking lens, but it is only for APS-C sized sensors. i.e. won't work on a full size sensor or film.

Cheers

Ian

Looks to be a bit cheaper as well.

Does it still have an alloy body, does anyone know?

Yes, magnesium alloy.

My 300D was good while it lasted...

Looks like a nice piece of kit, as expected. I do wonder whether cramming 8MP into a 1.6X sensor is really worthwhile, though - after all, I believe there's still a slight question mark over the 1D mk II's sharpness.

That said, if the new 9 point AF is any good, then with 5fps capability it could start to seriously challenge the '1' series for serious amateurs who shoot sports, like me. My 1D, it has to be said, is starting to feel a bit heavy - even though it makes photographing motorsports like shooting fish in a barrel.

I noticed this on photo.net earlier in the week. Some of the new lenses look quite nice as well, though they are aimed at the digital users. Espically to 10-22 (16-35.2) and the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM.

I think alot of people are hoping that the current 10D users are goign to upgrade to the new 20D, but as Ian (and many others) has said, the 'upgrade' is not enought to warrant a change.

I'd like the current D30 and D60 users to upgrade to the 10D so then I'll get their equipment

Only 5 RAW images in the buffer at any one time
Ian - one of the early reviews that I saw had the 9 and 5 transposed.... ie they quoted 9fps for 5 images - which may be where you have 5 image buffer from.

The true detail, now that the proper Canon PR is out - is (as expected) 5fps for 9 RAW images (up to 23 images in Jpeg fine).

Agree though - not a big enough improvement to produce an upgrade from the 10D. Now, a new 1Ds(MkII?) may cause a rethink and a remortgage....

See here for the PR http://www.usa.canon.com/templatedat...9_eos_20d.html

Ah, cheers Shades. That is the problem of reading stuff on the 'net.

Even so, only 9 RAWs in the buffer isn't much improvement. Might have to look at the 1D MkII now.

Canon needed something spectacular, and this looks bloody good

Highlights for me are the 9 point focus system, the adoption of a new lens standard (EF-S - like the 300D), microlenses on the CMOS sensor and 5fps burst.

Price *is* interesting ($1600 including lens, so street price of around £1000 inc vat is my guess) and the effect on 10D prices could be massive or could be nothing...

That's a nuts price... Street price has got to be a grand, surely? Mind you, people are still taking the p on the D70 price... They'll charge what they can get away with...

True, the price does seem a bit high but these are the recommended prices. Park Cameras usually undercut these quite a lot.

However, liek you say with the D70, I'm sure these will be in high demand so they can really charge what they want and they will still sell

Cool

Seems to me that Canon have not really adressed the caning that the 300D is getting by D70. Whilst ite 20D is undoubtedly a fine piece of kit (as is the 10D), is it really worth forking out £450+ pounds over the cost of the Nikon for one when you can have something on or nearly on a par with it in the D70?

Come on Canon, start a price war!

Its pure speculation but I've heard rumours that a 300D replacement will be released in the coming months???

Cool

It's possible, but as Canon are advertising the EOS 300D as it's 'new' DSLR on TV, I can't see it being replaced too quickly

The 300D might not be getting a caning by the D70, perhaps they are both selling fast. If that's the case Canon don't need to start a price war. Just a thought

Daryl, I think you've hit on something there. There's definitely different price points, and now there's three "relatively" affordable D-SLRs. The 300D starts the game off, with the D70 then finally the 20D.

Nikon is looking like it has nothing really in the 20D's marketplace...

chiark,

Nikon sell the D100for about £1000 body only. This body was created in answer to Canon's D30, so thats now old it is

Also, the 300D is now the second oldest DSLR still in production. However the 300D sales are still strong.

At the end of the day, which ever body you go for, I'm sure you will be happy

Thumbs up

Excellent, was looking at the 10D recently, but held of as I'd heard replacements were due in September for it and the 300D.

This definately moves things onto the next level away from the budget SLR's, especially when fitted with the L lenses.
