Go easy on the loud pedal. Light traffic with a (usually) empty road means speed traps are a popular past time on it.

As a private road, isn't it exempt from "some" laws?? I don't know the validity on this but someone said you could tow a non-taxed car there, pay the toll and use the non-taxed car on there all day legally....not that you'd really want to but you see the point.

Any ideas? Moderator Chris, you heard anything about these exemptions??

There are no fixed camera sites, but it is policed by CMPG.

M6 Toll is owned by a company called Midland Expressway

Can the CMPG issue penalties denoting points on your driving license like normal coppers or fixed cameras?? Whats CMPG stand for??

Sorry, talking in jargon.

CMPG is the Central Motorway Police Group (West Mids, Warks, West Mercia & Staffs), so they can stick you on as if you were on a Highways Agency managed road.

The Central Motorway Police Group provides a full-regionalised policing service for the motorways of the West Midlands, West Mercia, Staffordshire and Warwickshire force areas.

Based in purpose-built premises at Perry Barr in Birmingham the CMPG is made up of 199 police officers and 20 support staff and is responsible for patrolling 630 miles of motorway stretching from Cheshire on the M6 to the Welsh borders on the M50.

AFAIK, even though it's a private road the Road Traffic Act applies. I think that for a road to be exempt from the RTA it has to be gated at both ends to prevent public access.

Or something like that - it's how people have been done in Tesco's carpark.

It is gated at both ends. Called a toll booth? The public are prevented from entering unless they pay.

RTA still applies to it because it's a public place as far as the law is concerned.

Tis a bit of a complex one though

The public are prevented from exiting actually
Then it's extortion and kidnapping as a member of the public is being prevented from leaving unless they pay a ransom

The answer to the initial question...new road, so local plod loves enforcing it. But it's done by human / mobile laser etc, so no fixed cameras. Heard a of few people who have got caught for speeding. But as we know the virtually non existent human traffic policing these days, it's not what I would call "heavily" policed. My answer is not to use it But given the state of the M6 spag at the moment I'll let people off.

I love the way they it traps dozy middle lane hoggers on the M6 south, stick in the middle/fast lane and your straight onto the toll

The law is applicable on the toll just like any other road.

There are no fixed cameras on the toll section at the moment, but there are camera vans on bridges now and then. I drive it several times a week.

The main problem with the M6 toll (IMHO) is that people will sit in the middle lane doing about 80mph. Dont know why this is but on this one section I come across this every time I am on there!

Most people tend to do about 90mph on the toll IME.

It's actually state-owned - even though Midland Expressway paid for building it. They have a 99-year (I think - may be shorter) operating agreement in return. So normal road rules apply...

Good road though - everyone tonks along at 90-100mph, and the middle-lane-morons just get undertaken or nose-chopped.

One of the local police chiefs was recently done on it, he was doing 104 as I recall, but escaped severe penalties because he asserted that it was a "safe" speed at which to drive. Seems the magistrate, who I can only assume was a member of the same lodge, thought this was an excellent mitigation plea.

One law for them, another for us. I bet the same CC was on TV the next day justifying taking peoples licenses off them for 33 in a 30 and telling us how dangerous even 1mph over the limit is :-) you have to laugh.

As others have pointed out the RTA applies almost everywhere you can drive your car and the M6 doesn't have any fixed cameras but is often watched by mobile units. I have heard reports of the traffic flowing quite quickly on the M6 and I imagine this is an image the "owners" like to keep so they have probably been down the lodge as well ensuring that the enforcement limits are not set too tight. Wouldn't like to bet my license on it though.

Be careful if entering from the Tamworth road onto the toll westbound, there is a perfectly surfaced 270 degree corner to get round

Re the legal aspect, isn't it the case that any section of road that the public have access to (ie the toll road, the fact you have to pay at the end doesn't restrict the access) is subject to highways laws?? For example the bloke that was ticketed the other day for his dodgy spaced no. plate whilst in a car park

The M6 Toll doesn't have any fixed cameras, but be careful on the M42 between the M6 Classic and the M40! There are several GATSOs on the roadworks (which has a 50mph limit), EVERY camera is loaded, and the trigger threshold is very low I have been flashed TWICE now, whilst travelling at an indicated 50mph, caused by people overtaking only slightly faster than me

Must admit - i was quite surprised today, though. There was actually some work happening in the roadworks

According to my Road Angel - no fixed or anything else

If you decide not to use it and go via the M6 watch out for the 'Average' speed cameras through the roadworks.

Slow down, or at least pull in behind a lorry before every bridge
