Police in Cumbria and Liverpool recently announced that they have confiscated and crushed hundreds of vehicles owned by uninsured drivers.
Think they are missing out on a money making scheme here, take the cars to the local auctions instead and raise a few quid.

It's even worse when one of them crashes into you like I had the other week W@NKERS The worst part is that the police weren't interested at all that he had no tax and refused to give me his insurance details

I agreed i am coming upto my 3 insurance renewal on the scooby and have only needed the policy to get the tax disc, based on this i would have save nearly £3200 on the scoob insurance alone, and his "fine" is less than 10% of my premium, and definatly less than my excess, wonder why i bother really

Cant we crush them in their cars?

It still baffles me that the UK can not get this problem under control, here in Germany we can not get our number plates if we do not have insurance, insurance is also not renewed each year it just continues running and it is illegal to cancel your insurance except for 1 day a year, the only other way to cancel insurance is to deregister your car then you have to give the plates back to the council, you can not drive on false plates due to the stickers fitted to them, and you can not reregister your car without insurance so you won't get plates, it isn't rocket science.

Regardless of what system is put in place, people will still drive uninsured until the punishment fits the crime.

The fine should be what it would have cost the uninsured driver to insure the car they were driving, plus 1000 pounds. If they plead poverty, they go to jail. A month for every 100 pounds of their fine.

I bet a few of those that would normally plead poverty would suddenly find the money from somewhere. Also, if the fine was at least the amount they would have paid in insurance, it would be less worth taking the risk. The risk of being stopped nowadays (unless you drive a Scoob) is pretty small though...

Jerome
I agree exactly with your point. £150 fine is just plain stupid, our lawmakers must live on Mars or somewhere far away from this planet.
