How to keep a teenager amused on Sunday?
Aside from cocaine and hookers...
Son just turned 16 and spent his birthday in a room reading - he's on an Outward Bound course at present, back on Saturday. Don't mind making a fuss of him a bit on Sunday, and as he has no mates in the UK, it would be by novel activity. I'm wondering about fast car rides (dunno where or whose!!), clay pigeon shooting (legal for 16 yr olds??); karting is perhaps out as it's better in groups... I see also that there is a "European Fast Car Show" at Paddock Wood Hop Farm.
And the crunch criterion is it should be within 20 miles of the A21, as my transport is limited!!
Any ideas?

Radius can be stretched depending on activity, I suppose.

Hello
There is Bowles Outdoor center in Eridge (http://www.bowles.ac/), and another Rock climbing place just between Groombridge and Crowborough.
Perhaps one of those?
Steve.

Oh My God!
Bowles Rock in Kent??? I went there as a terrible 13 year old with my school. Oh, that website brings back memories of camping, hiking, skiing and canoeing.

Hi brendan, what sort of stuff does he enjoy... Is he into cars..? Music...? etc etc... Plenty of cool ideas here however, think its all too easy to recommend what we'd enjoy doing, rather than what he'd really like to do?

Brendan, if you're near TW, then there is the bowles outdoor ski slope, it's on the way from RTW to Crowborough, well the turning for it is.
There is meant to be some paintball place around TW, there used to be a sign in a field for it (action paintball I think) when you come from Tonbridge to TW
Brands hatch, but that's possibly be spectator only, rather than get a ride in a car, lest there be a track day on and some friendly people there.

ooh, thanks all!
Must look at Bowles.
Tourism in London - don't want to sound blase, but think we've done a lot of the main stuff. Will probably try Imperial War Museum on Saturday.
Paintball and karting better with a group of mates, I feel.
Balloon ride - methinks an impatient 16 yr old with much plane experience will get bored quickly. (I'd enjoy it though!)
Am persuading Dad to dust off his 12-bore and let the lad have some pops at static cans in the woods - sorry Nevetas
Spiderman2 - done that!
If I can get to Bowles for a snowboarding lesson, along with the 1-hr 4x4 driving in the morning, that should keep him happy for the day!

I’d agree with all of those, they all sound like fun, especially indoor snowboaring, I might add on indoor rock climbing to that, but not sure how fun that would be for one visit, unless he has some experience of climbing. If it’s a one off, you want something that you can get something out of straight away, not that you struggle at all day especially when you look around and see ten year olds doing back flips, and you struggling to stand up without failing over. I remember those teenage years of moody huffs and general Kevin type behaviour.
I would also of said trackdays as you mentioned, however, I don’t think you can do most track days without a licence, I.E. under the age of 17, but I know Brands Hatch and other tracks do a pre-test program, but I doubt it’s very inspiring. Also you might be able to get him on a Rally experience a it’s off road, not sure if that is different or not. Check out the back of all the car mags (Top Gear, Car, Autocar, Evo etc), they have all kinds of track day, and general experience adverts, from driving tanks and shouting guns, to flying helicopters – you name it, someone lets you do it.
Personally I would take him Karting which you are allowed to do as soon as you can walk, if my dad had done that, I probably wouldn’t of been such a bad child for so long, and stayed away from Cocaine and hookers for much longer, it would of kept me off the streets, and I would of got the bug for sure – maybe I could have been Jensson . 16 is a bit old for child prodigy, but you never know, you might have a Jesson on your hands and then you can retire!
Karting is cool even if you’re rubbish (not like a lot of sports), they seem so fast, even the really cheap put-put lawnmower stock ones they rent out, they’re still good for 60mph on a straight, and you can still get them to lift off oversteer, a great introduction to proper driving and motorsport, squealing tyres, the smell of burning fossil fuels and rubber – what teenager into cars could resist such temptation? I remember going on them for the first time, and they felt very rapid, just because you could touch the floor the closest thing I had done like that was sit down on my skate board on a very large hill. First few laps were bloody scary, noisey, slidy, generally a bit unsafe. By the third lap, I was lifting off on the fastest corner, trying to get it to do a top speed oversteer! Tis pricey though, you normally pay for 15mins slots, the one nearest to me (Sandown race course) is £25 for 15 mins, which is not cheap at all and the karts are ****e…I believe there is a mental one in Kent, that has hills and allsorts, think it may even have a cross over, with a tunnel underneath. Sure there are plenty of folks in here that know where all the karting tracks are, and what to look out for.
If not I can arrange cocaine and hookers, discount for scoobynet members PMSL

Day well sorted!
Wake up 9am. Out to Arena Pursuits in Flimwell for one hour 4x4 driving in a V8 Range Rover. As he already knows how to change gear (I gave him lessons in our old crapmobile), he had more time to spend going up steep bumps and through water splashes. BIG grin on his face!
Back to Flimwell, where P1_BEN is waiting with a nice (almost-)new set of Creative speakers for his Ipod - executive delivery by WR1, no less! [Cheers Ben!]. Totally unexpected as normally I don't buy "leisure-only" presents, and he was expecting to spend his savings on these.
Off to Knockhatch for an hour's personal snowboard tuition. This was bearable, as he wants to learn to snowboard, but the slope was covered in lichen and they water it once an hour to make it slippery - so each time he fell over (erm, every 8 seconds) he lands in half an inch of smelly water. Mixed feelings, but he did well for only an hour.
Back to home, where he has a shuteye, to be greeted on awakening by a 12-bore shotgun. First shot, despite all warnings, was a bit of a shock to the shoulder, let's just put it like that! In total he fired 8 cartridges, at practice board / stationary tin can / thrown tin can (three cans thrown, the last one very definitely dead upon landing).
Overall - a hit, a palpable hit! TBH, along with what he did on the Outward Bound course, he's almost confused now about what to boast to his mates about!

Glad he liked the speakers, hope they met expectation....
Sounds like he had a cool day.... and yes he certainly looked chuffed with both the driving and the speakers...
