Kids BMX bikes....
Anyone know anything about BMX bikes. Need to buy two; for my soon to be 10 & 8 year old sons. Looking at Mongoose, Hoffman and Diamond back.
Anything to stay clear off, etc. Do & don’ts…

Those were the days, what was the BMX with the ripple weld sections?
Anyone remeber Z rims? I used to be able to flex them right over
Ohh and Skyway Tuff II's - proper old skool

Got my 12yr old a Diamond Back for christmas. Still good quality but the brakes are crap!!! I think most modern ones have problems due to using the fashionable but impractical centre cable pull type brakes (probably not what they're called but it's what they look like!)

Mongeese and Diamondbacks are a shadow of their former selves these days unfortunately but it depends how serious the kids are about their bmx-ing I guess? I'm sure for 8 and 10 year olds any of the above would do the job more than adequately but I'd stick my neck out and say the hoffman.
Jaybird - think the ripple weld bike you're on about may be a PK Ripper? Z rims were quite funky & light but as you say - not exactly sturdy! Tuff 2's are still quality ...in fact I've just started to build up a couple of skyway t/a's, remember them? So if anyone out there has any 20 year old 80s bmx bits lying around..I'm your man

Jools,
Just been thru this with my 11year old, did lots of investigation, chatted to guys at the skate park, conclusion was to steer clear of Mongoose (very uncool), go for something pure BMX Hoffman, Haro, We The People, etc, good place to start, get yourself a copy of Ride magazine and get a feel for the prices, Ł200 will get you a pretty good setup, gyro, 3pc crank and decent rims. I bought a Haro Mirra 540 Air in the end. Quality bike, nice components, and it rides very well. Sourced it from Winstanleys, who gave me a good price (bought helmet and gloves too), speedy delivery and godd after sales (when I had to ask about assembling the brake cables !!).
Colour is also a factor especially with kids, to try and get a good bike in the colour they want !! nightmare.
Hope this helps.

Do they do bmx sizes for 7 years olds? My boy has never been into riding a bicycle (combination of fear of falling off and preferring other activities) and at 7 I have told him he really needs to sort it before all his mates who ride bikes give him a hard time or he feels left out. His birthday is in a couple of weeks and I had a chat with him and agreed he would have another bike and he would let me teach him this time round. I thought the best way to get him enthusiastic about learning would be to get him a bike so he will want to be able to ride it. Thing is Ł100 is about top whack so can you get anything half decent for that? Obviously want him to choose it as he is the one who has to like it but want to know what to say to him is good and whats not so good.

I have just bought a Mongoose Sniper.
For myself I might add
Interested to see that its thought of as "Uncool".
It was certainally cool enough for an prolonged attempted theft, with enough force used to bend the frame whilst trying to remove the lock
Bought it for 100 second hand, not worth the price of a cup of tea now
astraboy.

Astraboy,
Sorry to hear about your bike, I must add the "uncool" coments came from the guys at the park (long hair, baggy trousers, linkin park sweat tops), not my comments.

Many thanks people...
All,
SN never fail to impress…..many thanks for the feedback. Being away from home right now and needing to get this sorted before I arrive back in the UK limits what I can do, so I phoned the local bike shop (where I have bought 6 bikes from before) and he said they had the choice I mentioned in the first post. Called him back today and asked more about Hoffman; and he had two left. One is a Disrupter EL1 and the other a Disrupter EL2, so I bought them both for what I think is a great deal; as good as internet prices anyway, in fact better than some internet prices I have seen today. So again thanks for the help. I did figure the kids would go for Hoffman, name and all that, street cred, etc, but the feedback from parents with kids of similar ages helped a lot and made the final decision easier.
Cheers-Jools
Stuck offshore Denmark a week longer than planned….
