Cool boot mounted bike racks

Can anyone give me examples of decent bike racks that would fit both an Audi A3 hatch and a MY98 Scoob saloon with a high-level rear spoiler please?

Only need to carry 2 bikes, but would prefer not to have to get a lighting board. Neither car has a towbar.

Cheers,
Steve

Theres a clue here

"Neither car has a towbar."

Id say it'll be difficult to get the bikes on the impreza with the high spoiler.

ive got a 03 wrx and a 04 a3, and I use a Saris sentinel, they wouldnt confirm it would fit on the a3 as they have only tested american models and they dont sell the a3 in the US. but they said i could send it back if it didnt work out.

available from www.wiggle.co.uk get the 3 bike version even if you only plan to use 2 as the 2 bike version doesnt come with side straps to stop sway.

ive driven mine at 90 no problems, but both bikes are sub 25lbs.

cheers

Peter

Not wanting to hi-jack, more extend the thread, but similar question for an MY00 Wagon!!

It just worries me that these things are putting pressure on the rear window and don't fancy that popping out on the M1 and the pooch getting a face full of bike

Put the bike in the boot and strap the pooch to the bike rack, I'm sure then that the bike wouldn't be able to tell if it got a faceful of pooch because bikes don't have feelings.

the bike rack on the a3 goes on the glass, and havent had any problems, wouldnt want to put 3 heavyweight bikes on it though, so it depends on your bikes. but my giant xtc and my schwinn are no problems.

if it is only going on a wagon have a look at the bones system it spreads the weight better and keeps the bikes very stable, it will not go over any type of spoiler though.

LOL at Ray - no probs mate!

Pbee - I think they stock those in Halfords, I'll have a shufti & see if I can trial fit one to the scoob.

Thanks for the advice about the side straps - useful tip!

Cheers,
Steve

Wagon has 2 spoilers

Have to see if I can find a twin tow ball somewhere and get a towball mounted rack and can still tow the trailer as well.

Get a Thule roof rack system instead. Much more sturdy, looks better, and is more secure.....you just have to purchase the adaptors to fit it to different cars....

I already have Paddy Hopkirk roofbars, so would go for their version I guess. Just not sure how well the bikes will travel up top at errrr speed. Plus not keen on the hernia involved in getting the damn things up and down

I have an RB5 with the standard MY99 high (ish) wing. I use a Rhode Gear rack and it fits a treat. Shorter journeys I put the whole bike on and it's fine. If I'm going further (Coed Y Brenin say) I take the wheels off and just have the frame on the rack and it's rock solid regardless of how enthusiastic you get :-)

Maybe LeisureLakes do them?

Forgot to add, the Thule bike attachment should fit other roof racks other than Thule ones....

The Thule roof bike carriers really are a class apart. Lockable, sturdy, and well designed scandanavian solutions.

Hmm - only trouble with roof rack systems is that my other half is only just over 5 foot tall - so I know who'd be the designated loader!!

Cheers guys, some good stuff to follow-up there.
