anyone here of a certain age will remember being smacked as a child there is nothing wrong with it.
most of the 30-40 year old generation and older don't run around like the own the place causing trouble.
yank the little fackers out of school at 16 and shove em in the army for 3 years
teach em some respect
<<flame suit on>>
and bring back capital punishment for the worst crimes
IE
child molesting/ child murder
murder and rape
see how many people do it after we've hung a few of the scum

I don't disagree that they need to be punished and capital punishment may or may not be the best way to punish them but let's not go thinking that it will stop it happening.
On the subject of smacking kids, it's a line between smacking and child abuse/violence etc. but the people & politicians can't draw this line so they're just banning it altogether instead as it's easier.

Smacked as a kid, never did me any harm. Ranged from a light pat on the hand to a whack on the **** with a slipper. Yes it hurt and yes I cried, but I think that was the point being made! what I had done was wrong, and this was a lesson learned. It was not just a whack for the sake of it.
It is not for anyone except the parents of a child to decide how *their* child should be disciplined.
What I want to hear is how on earth you are meant to discipline your child if you cannot smack them? Shout at them? send them to thier room (where they can sit and watch a dvd, listen to music, or play on their xbox, hmm, doesn't sound like a punishment to me!)

I was smacked as a child and I've turned into a pretty normal adult. I would probably have gone off the rails if I wasn't smacked. My sister was never smacked, because she didn't need to be.
With children as young as 12 now committing armed robberies with sawn off shotguns, they should make smacking compulsory. At least one good thrashing a week IMO.

Problem with this legislation is that the main argument is to prevent child abuse. People who abuse kids won't stop because of a law on smacking.
I personally think that many parents smack when they shouldn't or use it to frivously as a means of typical punishment which does only teaches kids that violence is how you 'make' people do things. Parents should, however have the right to smack their kids as a last resort if they believe it's the only way to deal with the child in the given situation.

I was smacked when I was a kid and looking back on it I dont see anything wrong with it. I never swore for fear of my folks wrath. Saying that though, I can only ever remember my folks (dad) swearing once when someone took his wing mirror off while driving down a thin lane.
I guess with all the chav parents, its getting a bit like monkey see, monkey do. If the parents arent setting a good example for the kids to follow, do they really stand a chance?

Nothing wrong with a controlled smack if the child needs it to get the point home.
Dracoro,
I agree that the death penalty would not stop all murders from happening but I bet it would certainly discourage a very large number of them.
