UB, they're only 4 grand less than the X5. I'm astounded!

Quite how top gear can think AWD on the Jag is the best thing since sliced bread then feel it completely unnecessary on the X3 is beyond me, but when has journalistic talent or consistency of opinion ever applied to top gear?

It still looks a complete nail of a car tho . The first pic on this thread is the best looking verrsion I've seen!

Had it out on test drive on saturday, drove it around the island. We only test drove the normal version, and to be honest it drove well, but the seats were not very comfy. We are test driving the sport version next week, meant to have better seats, plus all the other "sport" extras.

We also test drove the VW jeep, which is ok, but the boot would kill you! goes up really slowly, and then bam! flys up really fast.

we also test drove the rav 4, which was crap. And we have a test drive booked with honda to try out the honda hrv if I recall.

But they carry less people than a people carrier, so what's the deal?

Remind me again why people CHOOSE to want a car like a X3/X5/Jeep/etc, when :

1) They don't handle as well as a non-jeep thing
2) They offer no more interior space than a non-jeep thing.
3) They are slower than a non-jeep thing
4) They roll a lot
5) They guzzle more fuel
6) They cost more than a non-jeep thing
7) Tyre roar

So, what is the advantage?

I could just be tempted by a Porsche Cayenne!

The Cayenne Turbo is powered by a 4.5-liter twin-turbo Cayenne V8. Maximum power of 450 hp is obtained at 6,000 rpm, preceded by 460 lb-ft of torque all the way from 2,250 to 4,750 rpm. With Tiptronic S, the Cayenne Turbo takes just 5.6 seconds to reach 62 mph with a top track speed of 165 mph.

agree with the above...after looking at jeeps/ml's/etc/etc we ended up with a galaxy V6.

friends just got the volvo 7 seater and in comparison the ford is faster, roomy, handles better and better equiped with leather captains chairs all round, twin aircon system satnav, etc.

black with black tints in looks like a SWAT van as well which is cool when hustling through town! Black van man comin through!

Buy an Sti Forester from Ian Lit. If you need more space, then the diesel VW Toerag.

End of story.

So, what is the advantage?
with tongue in Cheek

1). My missus's Disco with ACE behaves impecably, handles very well in most situations, even in the twisties
2). 7 Seats, so there is more space than my old scoob, not unless of course i prised a few into the boot
3). Not all 4x4s are slouches, Cayenne etc, Toerag (but you do not really buy them for the speed)
4). See my 1st point, computerised body roll control
5). The Disco uses on average 30 mpg (2.5 5 cylinder TD), my Scoob averaged 22 (2.0 4 cylinder petrol quaffer)
6). Entry level 4x4s prices are comparable to a scoob/top end vectra /saabura
7). Exhaust roar that totally drowns out the radio and blows the eardrums of those in the back of my old UK300

Horses for courses, why did we buy rally replica's then

Cheers

Jim
p.s. Do think the X3 is a monstrosity and my wifes Disco has the appeal of a house brick

Why do people whinge about people that own 4x4's and never take them off road. If someone likes a car then thats their choice surely. As for saying '' go buy a land rover'' - why? they look completely sh1te, agricultural piles of toss if you ask me.

If I could afford it I'd buy a Hummer - far less pratical than an X5/X3 but so what!

Would hardly call a range rover an agricultural pile of toss, pile of toss maybe, but hardly agricultural

Hummer, not only impactical, but likely to attract attention from insurgents and no doubt has the same build quality and finish of all american goods, shoddy with very little attention to detail

Cheers

People usually complain about Chelsea Tractor owners because they are so obviously buying into an image that it's hard not to criticise. The whole space/safety argument is nonsense as if that is truly what you are after then either a people carrier or normal estate would be the better option.

A Landy may be "an agricultural pile of toss" to you but it will beat most off roaders when it is driven off road where it belongs. By the same token, people are entitled to their opinion of other cars as you have ably demonstrated.
