Electric Fences

Electric Fences
Anyone know whether our neighbouring farmer can just "electrify" the fence that divides our 2 properties?
Slightly concerned about a 240V cattle electric fence being on our boundary. Small 5yr old daughter & her friends might not be too impressed if they bump into it

Had them as a boundary fence between farmers land and my parents house as I was growing up .... you soon get used to it
However, not too sure about the legality of what he's done Puff ....sorry

By 240V do you mean connected to the mains? What is the current (ie the harmful bit of leccy)? I can't imagine he would have a high current though, it doesn't take much to deter stupid cows.
When I lived in the counry as a kid we used to play dares to see who could take the most shocks . Pretty harmless really. The wire was connected to a battery though, not the mains.

Normally they tend to be used inside the perimeter fence, rather than as a perimeter fence for that very reason.
Made the mistake of peeing on one in the dark once, wouldn't recommend it......unless you're:
a) Into that kida stuff
b) Telboy.

I thought cattle fences were 24V normally with just a few milliamps of current. Ran into one as a good - only did it once though

Sort of work safe, although people will start to look at you strangely in the corridor...

LOL, so did we. I think it was a passage of right where I lived, you weren't a real 'man' unless you held on for at least 10 seconds.
They are usually harmless really, the farmer is unlikely to set up something whihc would land him in court if a kid accidentally touched it.

I suppose its preferable to having a herd of cows stampeding through your property!

Dunk,
I've peed on one in the dark as well. Don't recommend it at all, absolutely shocking, like a lightning bolt flying up my nether region. I woke the whole campsite up with my loud yell of "****". We laughed about it in the morning but the other happy campers weren't too happy when they finally got out of bed. Every time I see lightning I think of that little event.

James,
The electric fences have to be human safe, he will have to use a specialised current limiting fence.
If he just wires up the mains to the fence he will be breaking the law.
Cattle fences will still give you a nasty jolt though.
Cheers

If it is on his property I think you would be within your rights to ask him to at least site it far enough away from your boundary so that the chidren could not touch it. It must be harmless enough but unpleasant for the children of course. The way to check if it is working is to touch it with a blade of grass.
