r32,
I asked the same question recently, as Johnny50 has pointed out.
I ended up staying at the new Holiday Inn express on Picardy Place, opposite the Playhouse in the east end.
The hotel just opened 3 months ago, so is brand new and really smart.
We got a special online deal - twin room with continental brekkie for £59.
Its ideally situated near the decent pubs and clubs too.
I'd stay away from the west end and grassmarket though, as someone on another thread stated......

I'm staying at the HolyRood Aparthotel in a couple of weeks - it's apartments (as the name suggests) but there are 4 of us, so we need two bedrooms and some 'privacy' space.... It also has underground parking I believe...

The 4* Crown Plaza - exact middle of Royal Mile - but was about £60 per person per night, but if you like a big breakfast then it's well worth it - all you can eat job.
