Starting a new company (IT contractor)
Bit new at all this, but might need to get a company set up sharpish (i.e. tomorrow or Thurs!) so I can take a new job and get paid. Anyone out there know of some decent people to call, pros and cons etc?
Also, what are these "umbrella" setups I've heard of? I assume they are just there as a "shell" for the agency or client to pay money into. Are these better / worse than setting up your own company?
Cheers
Steven

Does it have to be a Limited company? I set mine up in 14 hours using UKPLC.net, cost about £50. It would have been quicker, but Companies House was shut on the Sunday night when I filled in my details
As for using an umbrella company, it depends on what you plan to do. If you're just contracting, then an umbrella is probably better for you (less hassle) but if you plan to operate as a company, as I do, then Ltd. is probably better.

Can't say on umrella's but I used http://www.accountingIT.co.uk for years before going permmy.
Very nice people, great service, reasonable price and they did ALL the work!!
I did a fair bit of work in Africa and they saved me a FORTUNE in tax after much negotiation with the IR *spit*.
If pricing services from others, make sure they include end of year and personal self assessment, many don't...
Good luck!
