ARE YOU MAD!!!??? You put a fiver on the lottery?? What a waste! I very rarely play the lottery but when I do the most I'll cough up is £2! When you think about it, those extra three lines aren't really narrowing your chances, are they? Where are milo/imlach to work out the odds?

Yes they ARE narrowing your odds!! Assuming it's 14 million to 1 to win, then 1/14,000,000 is way worse than 5/14,000,000 (which can also be expressed as 1/2,800,000).
Of course, 1 in 2.8 million still isn't exactly *great* odds...

No, cos i'm using the calculated odds to win, which take account of the combinations - i think!! Happy to be told otherwise by any REAL mathematicians!!

lol - can't believe I discussing this I must be bored
the way I see it - your saying 5/2.8mil means that each ticket would have 2.8mil each
Starts for low to high combinations therefore first would be 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 with last being 43 44 45 46 47 48 49
1 ticket - between 1 - 2.8m combinations
2 ticket - between 2.8m -5.6m combinations
3 ticket - between 5.6m - 8.4m combinations
4 ticket - between 8.4m - 11.2m combinations
5 ticket - between 11.2 - 14m combinations
The way to reduce the odds to 2.8 million is to have each ticket line to be non-overlapping numbers. Therefore the non-overlapping numbers would be
1 ticket - 1.4m'th combination
2 ticket - 4.2m'th combination
3 ticket - 7m'th combination
4 ticket - 9.8m'th combination
5 ticket - 12.6m'th combination
