at the moment i work from 7am to 5pm, i have a 10 minute break in the morning around 10 am then 30 minutes for lunch at 1pm.
I am pretty sure the law states that you are entitled to a break every 4 hours, not sure how long the break is for.

According to the HMSO website the break entitlement is 20 minutes.
See http://www.legislation.hmso.gov.uk/s...9981833.htm#10
Rest breaks
12. - (1) Where an adult worker's daily working time is more than six hours, he is entitled to a rest break.
(2) The details of the rest break to which an adult worker is entitled under paragraph (1), including its duration and the terms on which it is granted, shall be in accordance with any provisions for the purposes of this regulation which are contained in a collective agreement or a workforce agreement.
(3) Subject to the provisions of any applicable collective agreement or workforce agreement, the rest break provided for in paragraph (1) is an uninterrupted period of not less than 20 minutes, and the worker is entitled to spend it away from his workstation if he has one.
(4) Where a young worker's daily working time is more than four and a half hours, he is entitled to a rest break of at least 30 minutes, which shall be consecutive if possible, and he is entitled to spend it away from his workstation if he has one.
(5) If, on any day, a young worker is employed by more than one employer, his daily working time shall be determined for the purpose of paragraph (4) by aggregating the number of hours worked

is there not a health and safety regulation that says you should have 15mins away from a computer screen (though you can still be working) for every 2 hours you spend looking at the screen?

You are allowed 20 mins if working more than 6 hours.

VDU regs are a different ball game, it depends whether you are using them as part of your job or high intesity such as an airtraffic controller.
Not sure of the exact break requirments, only tend to get involved with the lighting requirements.

I get 15 minutes in the morning, an hour for lunch and 15 minutes again in the afternoon.
I don't always take the smaller breaks; as long as they are there when I need them!
Oh the joys of working for a public body!
Edited to say: They are all paid too!

Interesting question.
I know that I should be able to take a 10 min break every four hours (never do though). Also, I get an hour for lunch, which I hardly ever take.
Having said that, I could seriously take the pee. We're in a totally non smoking building and most of the people in the office smoke, so they'll bugger off downstairs for a *** break rather frequently, which is a tad unfair, as I don't smoke, so I take it as read that I can **** off for a break whenever I like.
I do remember having the option of telling them to make the old UK office non-smoking, and was tempted, just to wind the buggers up, but boss + lack of nicotine is not healthy to the working environment.
