Rules of Badminton?
Just had a game of Badminton with my daughter - not played for over 30 years.
She had played at school but was unsure of the rules - all she knew is that only the server could score!?
I told her that was pathetic as why play a good rally just to win the right to serve, anyway, she insisted ....... and we then played to my rules which were the same as Table Tennis!
Does anyone know the rules? Please keep it VERY simple!!
Cheers
Pete

Can't remember saying I won??
I did, however, as I lose at nothing!
Cannot ever remember Table Tennis having those rules??
Even more confused now ...... the next thing you will be saying is that the eldest person playing Trivial Pursuit cannot look at the answers!!

A thread on badminton?!!
My sport Pete, seriously.
Tel's simple rules for singles.
1. The side tramlines are always out. Actually hitting a line is "in" though.
2. The rear tramlines are always in, on any shot including serve.
3. Serve is decided by the usual rough/smooth thingy. You can stand anywhere in the appropriate service box to serve, and anywhere you like to receive.
4. On an even score (and therefore at the beginning of a game) you serve diagonally from the right hand box, on an odd score diagonally from the left hand box.
5. The head of the racquet has to be below the handle at the point of serving.
6. There is no such thing as a "let" serve - if the shuttle touches the net, no re-take.
7. The shuttle has to clear the front service line. If it doesn't, serve goes to the opponent.
8. Points can only be won on serve.
9. Dodgy shots off the frame are ok, scoop shots are not.
10. Unless you're playing new-fangled rules, it's the first to 15 points for a game, although at your age first to 11 (wimmin's rules) might be advisable.
That's pretty much the basics. Anything else you need to know?

Telboy - thanks for that, yes I have a few questions:-
1. How do we score? 15-love? or just 1-0, 2-1, 8-15 etc?
2. So, when someone serves and after a rally the opponent wins that rally all they actually win is the right to serve next time? Sounds really weird?
3. The back line - is it the inner line when playing singles?
Cheers Matey

2. Yep, that's right. The same as in squash. In some leagues they play "American" rules which means that you actually win a point as well as the right to serve. This is often done in tournaments when time is at a premium. It isn't the official rule however.
3. No, as i mentioned, the rear tramlines are always "in", even for service. People often refer to the singles court being "long and thin" for this reason.
The only other rule i didn't include that is worth knowing at a beginner level is that nothing is allowed to touch the net apart from the shuttle. If your clothing or racquet brush it, then you forfeit serve if you're serving, or a point if your opponent is serving.

What about the Short service line??
But your racket may pass over the net on the follow through as long as you don't touch the net, and you may not strike the shuttle until it has passed over the net to your side - phew!
