Default Broken rib advice?

Pretty sure that I broke a rib a few days ago in a MTB accident. Heard a crack as I fell and it's hurt to breathe deeply, cough or sneeze since then.

Is there anything I should/shouldn't be doing? I have read that it takes 4-6 weeks to heal, is this true?

Cheers,

Mart.

If you go to the hospital they will do nothing, maybe give you some strong pain killers and thats your lot.

It/they will heal in time, you dont need to be told what to do as the pain will tell you what you can and cant do.

First two weeks are the worst, then it eases off after that.

You should be able to tell which one is broke, and as to wheather its the front, side, or back of the cage.

Sleep well....

Get it checked out unless you are in the medical profession you will not know exactly what it is. In my experience it is always prudent to get the experts to have a look. Go to A&E or to your GP. Even if Yoza is correct it still best for peace of mind.

They may do something if its fractured and sticking in your lung.

But Aaquil is right, go and seek medical attention.

Better to be safe than sorry.

If its any consolation Martin; bruised and cracked ribs hurt more... If youre still interested in a Supra let me know btw; I doubt that you will be able to find a model report for a 97- model though.

Go to a hospital!

I did something similar a couple of years back and did nothing, expecting it to heal itself - the pain affected my breathing and I started breathing "shallow" even though I wasn't aware of it, so my brain wasn't getting enough oxygen and I eventually passed out.

Ended up requiring physiotherapy to sort it.

A workmate broke his last week, and didn't bother with the hospital for three days, he then went in with breathing trouble and found out he'd puntured his lung. He's now walking round with a hole in his side where they drained his lung.

My wife fell off my bike and thought she had broken it, she had Xrays and they said it was ok, which was lucky as we were flying to spain three days later and they wont let you fly. Apparently the pressure can puncture a lung. So if you are thinking of flying GET IT CHECKED.

take a full course of painkillers, 2x 500mg Paracetamol 4 times daily, 2 before bed and 2 when you get up and the other 2 doses splitting the rest of the day. Don't miss any and don't take more than 4x2x500mg per day. They have a cumulative effect and it builds up to a good pain killing regime. DO NOT EXCEED the dosage. Paracetamol are very effective painkillers if taken correctly.

Take the good advice-get it checked. It could certainly cause major damage if it is broken.

You will be able to feel it with your fingers across the ribs , If it was disjointed you would know about it, I have broken 3 & cracked 4 so far & every clever Tw@t has to make you laugh until your crying with pain. They will take 4 to 6 weeks to heal, after 2 weeks things will start improving, The Docs & hospital will do nothing, They used to strap them up, but that made healing, & breathing worse, Painkillers & patience is required,
Try not to catch a cold as a Sneeze really Hurts
Take it from a Veteren Rib breaker
