I am after learning to speak Spanish and purchased the BBC learn Spanish book and twin cd's but am buggered if I can understand the damn thing.

I am thinking of having lessons with a tutor and wonder if anyone else has any experience of this. Am I going to find it easier with a tutor than a disc?

I used to have lessons from a Spanish woman here in the UK. I was paying £15 an hour. I did find out that I actually knew a lot more than I thought I did - she was confident that I could pass an A-level exam.

It's actually surprising that there are probabaly over 2000 words that are very similar between English and Spanish anyway. Once you've learnt some vocabulary the rest comes easily. For example Vocabulary + Vocabulario, Condition + condicion etc.

Another good CD set is the Michel Thomas course, it's 8 hours and just teaches you to talk to start, if you decide to learn the grammar and spellings afterwards then other courses will help.

It's also worth looking for night classes in your area.

You'll find it easier with a tutor but also use the study material in conjunction with it. Your best bet would be to find a Spanish speaker to converse with or study the language with a mate and set aside some time to converse only in Spanish each day.
