Visa & Mastercard scam

Visa & Mastercard scam
Friend of mine passed me this, posted on this companies internal website. Some of you might if it useful...
"The following scam telephone call has been reported.
You are called from someone claiming to be from the Security and Fraud department at 'VISA' or 'Mastercard', and told that your card has been flagged as having an unusual puchasing pattern. They ask you if you've bought an item costing £497.99 from a marketing company based. When you say 'no', they tell you that they will be issuing a credit to your account for that amount. They then tell you that they will start a fraud investigation: they know your address, and give you a telephone and reference number relating to their call. Then they say they need to check that you are in posession of the card, and they do this by asking for the three digit security code on the back of your card. They are then able to make a purchase on your card for £497.99, but because they've 'warned' you about it, and told you a credit is on its way, it makes you less likely to report it straight away, making it harder to prove. I spoke to the fraud department at VISA to check this, and they have confirmed that this is a genuine problem."

How do they know the card number? Would they not need this as well as the 3 digit security code?

Barclaycard have rung me a few times when ive been buying lots of large purchasers, And they ask me to confirm what the items are and how much and how they were purchased to prevent fraud.
They never ask card numbers or security numbers, and always ask me security questions to check its actually me on the phone. And I can ask them any item from my last months statement to prove it is barclaycard.
This is a good thing, but im sure some mugs will give the card details out over the phone.

As far as I know it's not a hoax. And last time I checked....you didn't have to pass an IQ test before they let you have a credit card

I have a rather large limit on my egg card
I bought a pair of turntables on the card a few weeks back- got a letter from egg the next day asking if it was genuine- or if it was dodgy.
Top service
