Default Hissing coming from home cinema speakers?

Its a Sony DAV-S800 system & all the speakers are quietly hissing away & I dont know why? anybody hazard a guess? It happens as soon as I switch it on with everything from the radio, TV or DVD coming through it

Cheers

Sounds like a faulty amp. I take it that it never used to do this?

Interferance. Try unplugging each source one by one, like the cd player.. then the dvd player etc. Think this problem is pretty common, something to do with grounding.

speaker cable running next to power cable? to moving power cable and see if that helps.

If it's high frequency and it doesn't vary in frequency when you turn the volume up, then suspect power supply components. If it varies as you turn the volume up, then look for a broken feedback loop in the output stage.

Most if not all hi-fi will make a certain amount of white noise anyway, cheaper home cinema systems especially, but this is normal and nothing to worry about.

poor speaker cabling
Have you seen the 'cough' speaker cable on these, more like bell wire. I think I'd rule out the cable tbo. Also mains interferance etc causes causes a hum, not a hiss.

Really depends how loud it is?
Do you have to get quite close to the speakers to hear it?

If so then I would say this is fairly normal. You'll get this on all but the most high end hi-fi systems. I'll have a listen to my DAV-S800 when I get home tonight. I'm sure it hisses a little bit but not loud enough to be heard more than a few feet from the speakers.

Thumbs up

Thanks folks I`ll try moving the speaker cable etc away from the power cable & see how that goes.
The hissing is quite annoying as now we have the system on quite low, small baby in bed!, its more noticable. It does seem to have just started but then again with the higher volume we used to use it on it's probably masked it.

I`m off tomorrow so I`ll take it to bits & reroute the cabling.

I`ll keep you posted!

Talking

I had this on a Sony amp. It hissed for approx 1/2 hour after turning it on...then it stopped. My fix was to leave the thing turned on.

Try it.

Earth loops make hi-fi equipment hiss like this. If there is an earth cable sticking out of the back of the equipment to ground it, attach it to something metal (most metal things work!). A last resort I found which works brilliantly is to take the earth cable out of the plug, just snip it back and re-wire without the earth. I don't recommend this for high wattage things but it works well on hi-fi equipment.

remove all the inputs from external devices, dvd player stb tv ect, and see if it does it by itself.

if it does add each item one by one until a culprit is found.

if it doesnt you have a problem with the unit itself take it back if you can
