Extra Bank Holiday. When?
Unions are pushing for an extra bank hol to bring us more into line with the rest of Europe. When do you reckon this day should be. Autumn I think as it always seems such a long time from August hol to Xmas.

id rather it be in the summer (well that gives us about 3 possible days then )... probably early july. at least then the school kids wont benefit from it if they're on holiday anyway
personally tho id rather have it (and a few others instead of the current bank holidays) as a "take it when you like" day. let's face it, you can't go anywhere or do anything on a bank holiday unless you want to push thru crowds of folks...

Bank Holidays are a very English thing....not many get them up here in Scotland. Rather have them on annual allocation than an enforced & useless Monday holiday. Our company gives us 5 days extra holiday instead of having all the useless bank holidays (aside from Christmas and New Year). I'd much rather have a contiguous 5 days than separate Monday holidays.
Anyway, they are bank holidays. Surely, by nature of the name, for those that work in banks, which is not very many of us

I agree that it is better to have the days when it suits you. As a general rule, because of the shifts I usually work, I rarely get bank holidays and when I do it's only by luck rather than design. However, I'd prefer it like that as then I can take the days when it suits me. Means about an extra 2 weeks of leave per year in the end as usually I don't get Xmas, New Year or any of that stuff.
To be honest I think the idea of having random days when the whole country stops is dated and downright stupid but many people like to get their bank holidays so whatever keeps them happy. The thing that annoys me most, as someone for whom it is a normal day, is the belief that because it is a bank holiday there is no need for transport etc. to keep running as normal. Try getting to work using public transport when there are only 2 buses in the whole day.

Chip - October is good. There was call to have one around the 15th and call it Trafalgar Day. It was vetoed " 'cos we might upset the French" .... FFS who gives a monkeys? They wouldn't ...
Yep - more holidays is good. Who wouldn't want a long weekend in that summer/Xmas period?

In fact, we should extend our allocation of Bank Holidays to equal that of the aforesaid Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys.
Then we could have...
Agincourt Day, Crecy Day, Poitiers Day, Toulouse Day, Waterloo Day and so on and so forth. In fact, if we included them all we'd probably not have to bother turning up for work until June at the earliest if we had them back to back.
