Cool Back Up and Running.

Why do these ruddy things happen on a Bank holiday weekend?

At 19:13 this evening my machine's PSU decides to blow up leaving me stranded with the prospect of no internet or TV (get TV via PC now) for the entire weekend.

Not to be out done, I have just swopped the entire contents of my machine from it's blown case to the case of my older machine - two strip downs and one rebuild in 1hr 45mins. And hey presto - we are back up and running again. Albeit with somewhat of a 'Frankenstein's monster' of a machine till I can get a replacement case next week. I'm amazed it all just worked first time. Most unusual in my experience.

Anyway, I reckon I deserve a beer or two.

Its amazing what can be accomplished in the face of adversity when an evening of no TV or Internet is on the cards!

Perhaps, quite often they are fixed in place though. I just took the option I thought would work. I reckon it would have been at least the same amount of owrk to swap the PSU as you still have to strip the machine to get it out anyway.

Perhaps they should supply PC "jump leads"

PC in one corner TV in the other, I call this redundant entertainment unit - if one fails the others still there

Politically Correct jump leads. Now there's a thought. They would only work on Nissan Micras and 2CVs though.

Still got the old tellie, in the spare room. My entire vido collection is now digitised in VCD format as is anything else I record video wise. Much better than the old way of viewing. Haupage are my friends.

Best part of two hours to swap a PSU?

Did you get a guide dog for the blind to do it UB?

LOL - no I had to swap the contents of one machine into the other. Couldn't swap the PSU.

Personally, given the desparation of the situation, I would have placed the old PC next to the new PC and stretched the wires over from the old PSU to the new PC.

Mind you, you've got me thinking new. If I can just swap the PSU in the blown case I will. That'll save a bit of cash. There are dozens of old carcasses laying around at work - and I'm not referring to the VPs either.

talking about fixing things:

earlier today i fired up the amp that drives the speakers in the kitchen as i wanted to get a bit of boogey going on whilst i washed up. however, nothing happened. investigation revealed that a fuse in the back of the unit had blown. i took it out and was going to sawp it for a 5a fuse out of a lead i don't require - but it's a different size. i then weighed up the options:

a) go out and try to find someone who sells these tiny fuses
b) do without music in the kitchen
c) reconfigure stuff so that another map drives the speakers

unfortunately d) was the preferred option:

wrap dud fuse in kitchen foil and re-fit.

does this option seriously compromise my safety? the sockets are mcb & rcd protected in any case so i reckon it shouldn't matter that much...

*hijack*

Are they "messenger service" popups? If so you will only stop them by using a firewall to block ports 135 and 1026 or by disabling the messenger service on your PC

*why* do these things only happen on Bank and other Public holidays? Is it some wierd Karma thang going on?

I would say that the fuse blew for a reason though. The foil repair whilst expedient may cause something much more expensive to fail in the longer term.

BTW I find radio headphones the preferred method for getting music around the house and garden. Couldn't be without those either.

UB it's the same when you get toothache - mostly happens at a weekend or a Bank Holiday when all dentists are closed

An RCD will do nothing if something is shorting unless current leakage is occuring. This means you will get up to 13 amps or whatever is the weakest fuse/breaker in the circuit running through whatever caused the fuse to blow in the first place! Chances are it failed due to natural degradation of the conductor in the fuse... then again your tinfoil could be glowing away in there just anticipating the slightest whiff of molten wax off a neighbouring component before spontanaeously igniting.....

Yes. Or in my case when I was about to fly out to the States for 2 weeks.
