1) Start Button -> Run
2) type "services.msc" then OK
3) Find service called "Messenger" in the list and double click on it
4) Set "Startup type" to disabled and hit OK

Job done.

Happened to me when I went to Barcelona for UEFA semi final. Was impossible task to make myself understood, let alone follow directions to a Dental Surgery

Blown bulbs trip MCB's because the molten element can sometimes short out the poles instantaneously inside the bulb causing too much current to be drawn for a split second, and the breaker trips. A breaker on the ring main will have a much greater rating though, so there will be more current available to your makeshift fuse before anything trips. The weakest link being the fuse in the plug most likely.

I was pulling your leg though, chances are if something bad was going to happen it would have happened the instant you turned the amp back on!

ooops.... in step 4 I forgot to mention press the "Stop" button to stop the service now, otherwise it won't take effect until you reboot.

Bollox ... that advice was given FOC in a non-professional capacity, hence detaching me from all legal liablility...

besides... he should be more careful about accepting IT help from strangers on the internet!

No, MSN messenger is something entirely different.

Messenger service (the one I gave directions to disable) is the one that accepts "net send" requests to your IP address that causes popups with "Messenger Service" in the title of the box.

To see the effects of Messenger Service (if its enabled) do the following:-

1) Start Button -> Run
2) Type "net send %username% Test Message" (exactly as I have written but without the quotes) and press OK

You will get a popup messenger service popup with "Test Message" on it. Spammers fire these out to randomly generated IP addresses on port 135 usually.

I don't even have a service called Messenger listed

But I'm guessing that's a good thing.

arrrrgh its too late, curiosity has been activated... I have just had to boot up a w2k machine to check.... the service is still definately called "Messenger" on W2k.

Does the test I posted above work? If not then I guess the service has been removed from your machine for some reason, but they don't come disabled by default. Maybe antivirus software or personal firewall software has disabled it?....

right... as we were!

Yeah, we've been there, but in his own words he doesn't know what a firewall or a port is hence disabling the messenger service!

Anyway.. please feel free to take over from here, this is too "worky" for a bank holiday!

Yes, your firewall will be blocking port 135 incoming, so your messenger service can run on your machine without getting requests from the internet.

How about...

1) Unplug PC
2) Put back in box
3) Return to place of purchase for a refund

aarrggh... what have I started....

My OS has been 'tweaked' by my IT guys at work. Might explain it.

Is this not something connected to having MSN installed? (Which I don't have) Also I have Zone Alarm active, but I can't see that disabling things, or does it?

Correct

UB, as ajm (I think) said earlier, Messenger service is nowt to do with MSN Messenger or Windows Messnger.

Nope, Messenger Service is entirely unconnected to MSN (or Windows) Messenger and is responsible for accepting requests to produce little popup boxes like this:-
