Even tho my router firewall is blocking it, is it still advisable to disable it, as ajm said earlier?

It wouldn't do any harm to disable it but some software (like antivirus etc) uses it to send alert messages to you. If you have a decent firewall I wouldn't bother, especially since you are getting no annoying popups there is no point disabling it.

I have it enabled on the private side of all my networks because it is useful for sending out administrative alerts to users when email is down etc. But like I said, if you have a firewall then you won't get any problems from having it enabled.

LOL! I didn't mean to start a panic.... messenger service is there by default, its part of the operating system and has been ever since the UNIX msg system was invented. It was intended for internal admin messages etc but spammers have started abusing it. If you have a firewall it will block incoming messages anyway.

Nor me I actually use it.

Disabling it only masks the fact that your PC is insecure.

I've never had a problem of this sort (luckily). I'm just curious as to why I don't have Messenger on my machine. As I say the OS has been doctored a little, perhaps thats why?

Just double checked. It's deffo not there

I have never had those type of pop-ups but did get some sort of pop-ups a few weeks back from a DialTop virus thing that managed to get on my PC, which must have been from a link I clicked on in SN

Now you come to mention it, I get all this unwelcome garbage come up every time I am on Scoobynet.... the worrying thing is that my name is against most of it!

righto, just read the last 2 pages and while none of it made any sense to a pleb like me the problem seems to have been solved

yes they were messenger service pop ups and cheers ajm for (so far) saving my computer from a ritual killing

i rebooted after following your instructions thinking that was what was necassary (i'm getting the hang of this now) and all was ok for the 1/2 hour i used it after and seems fine now.

cheers again peeps
