Hello

IQ's are interesting -- I have an IQ of around 170 (from Mensa tests a few years ago) and have met lots of so called "geniuses".

The problem being that the IQ tests seem to measure the ability to recognise sequences and rotate things in space, which is a very specific and somewhat biased view of being "intelligent".

Steve.

Not wishing to pi55 on your chips, but a MENSA IQ test has a maximum of 161 under the Cattel B test (their preferred test) although this can alter slightly by age group etc.

Tiggers:

I took it when I was 15, and mine wasn't the highest score. As that was a considerable amount of time ago (!), perhaps they have changed it?

Agreed - Mensa tests aren't conclusive - which is why they ask you to take an exam in controlled conditions as well.

Those online IQ things are fairly random in their results.

I assume you meant minimum of 161...

Also, IIRC, you need to take several tests and average the score. I averaged 125. The average university graduate has between 110 and 130.

I read it that Tiggers meant maximum as he was saying that an IQ of 170 wasn't possible if there was only a 161 ceiling.

That was until Boxst explained it was years ago he achieved it.

The few "quick IQ tests" that I have had the patience to complete have shown quite a large variance in the results, anywhere from 110 to 150, so I think its fair to assume their reliability must be questionable. As boxst said, the quick tests tend to be what used to be called "verbal reasoning" type tests that focus on pattern recognition, spatial awareness etc. I have never sat, or seen for that matter, a MENSA test so I don't know how they differ.

A better test of "useful intelligence", if they could devise one, would be something that also factors in the retention, comprehension and, most importantly, the ability of useful application of knowledge.

For example, whilst a high IQ may be able to recognise 1st order and 3rd order projections of the same complex engineering drawing, the spatial awareness aspect, they may not be able to actually interpret the drawing itself to useful effect.

Anyone fancy inventing a UIQ (Useful Intelligence Quotient) test?

Taken from here

A top 2% mark in any of these frequently used tests below qualifies you for entry to Mensa. The minimum test mark to get into Mensa is:
  • Cattell B - 148
  • Culture Fair - 132
  • Ravens Advanced Matrices - 135
  • Ravens Standard Matrices - 131
  • Wechsler Scales - 132

Jerome- What's your point?

Taken from the site you linked:

"A middle aged adult can only get a maximum IQ of 161 on the Cattell "B" test."

So maximum it is then.

I did have some IQ results from way back, but I cannot remember what type of test and the scoring, all I know is that it was good

The thing is, what I have observed is that you can have a person with a super high IQ but have absolutely no commen sense. Even when it comes to really trivial matters, they can crunch numbers without a problem, but have no ability in making scenario based decisions. Driving, or servicing a car being a very good example of this.

Thumbs up

Spot on Ali-B..

However their ability to problem solve tends to mean that they do get there eventually in the end...

That's not to say that they aren't still complete fannies though

You just made me think of a conspiracy that David Blunket is intending to use ID cards to store IQ scores. Which in the future will dictate access rights to institutions etc. depending on a persons IQ...scary

But then again, may help keep this growing chav population under control

agreed, If I had actually been sat in front of Chris Tarrant instead of festering in front of the telly I would be a multi millionaire by now

I qiuckly did the test out of interest.

There was a time in an office I worked in where they were really competive about this sort of thing.

I consistantly get between 130-140 on various online tests. They kept coming up with different URL's to make sure I wasn't cheating!! I got lucky on one and pissed everyone off with a result of 157!!

But how do you know they're more intelligent and how is it possible to tie them in knots without touching them?

I think it because Scoobynet is generally frequented by people who own performance cars, most are discerning and have enough money to buy and run such a car, therfore I expect most earn the money to pay for their hobby and generally it stands to reason that to do this they must be in reasonably well paid employment which usually means that he employer pays well for their skills and or intelligence, therefore they must have some !

Am I making sense ?
