Airguns banned?

Airguns banned?
Read it on teletext news the other day. Said all co2 powered guns were banned and should be handed into policce stations or apply for a firearms licence.
How do you apply for a firearms licence and what would entitle you to have one?
I paid £150 for my airgun not to long ago and it seems unfair to have to hand it into a police station. Wouldn't mind if they would give me what I paid for it.

or to make it quicker....
IMPORTANT NOTICE
The government has announced that from January 20th 2004, it will become illegal to purchase, acquire, manufacture, sell or transfer any weapon that uses a Self Containted Gas Cartridge (SCGC) system. (i.e. Brocock, Uberti, Pietta, Saxby&Palmer and Crown).
If you own such a weapon, you will have 3 choices.
a) hand your gun into the police for destruction with no compensation.
b) apply for a Firearms Certificate (FAC) from the Firearms Enquiry Officer at your regional constabulary. This costs approximately £50 for 5 years. (if you already own an FAC, you can apply to your regional constabulary for a variation, which will allow you to keep such weapons in your posession. This costs apporximately £26 and is valid for the period up to the date of your renewal).
c) have your weapon deactivated by an authorised dealer. This will cost approximately £50.
A three month 'implementation period' will commence on the 20th January 2004 to allow you to comply with the legislation - if you have done neither of the above and are caught in possesion of a SCGC weapon, you will be committing a serious offence and are likely to face a minimum five year jail sentence (under the Criminal Justice Act 2003).
The three month 'implementation' period finishes on the 30th April 2004 , so you will have until this date to make your application for an FAC or FAC variation. The government has also stated that no offence will be committed where someone has applied for a certificate or variation before the 30th April 2004 and their application remains outstanding or is the subject of an outstanding appeal.
N.B. The above does not apply to weapons that use a Co2 bulb system because Co2 bulbs do not contain a projectile and are therefore not completely self-contatined.

I always carry my handguns out of sight in the car even the rig.
And make a point of when I get them out at home that the curtains are drawn. just be sensible I suppose
What kind of handgun stuff do you do. Practical pistol or more target orientated sport stuff.
My personal favourite is the sig225 has a nice grip for an average hand.
Also quite like the Barettas but find them a bit big. CZs and PPKs are others I have I quite liked.
Best wishes
Steve
It is very very tight over here already. For example
In France you just need an address to own a gun. In Switzerland many people have guns, so there are very few bank robberies as the bad guys know they will get sloted by most of the customers!

Just hide the air the ammo and gun in seperate places.
Practical pistol is my thing. Concealed carry, room clearance, vehicle stuff etc. So more instinctive shooting not so much looking down a sight. I can see the appeal in sniping, some of the lads I train with are excellent army trained snipers, I should get them to show me but have never got round to it.
Best Wishes

My work colleague got shot at by an airgun while cycling to work the other day. Turns out someone else got shot at on 4 occassions last year on the same route.
I'd say licensing them seems sensible....never understood why airguns were exempt from firearm laws??? It is a gun after all....and it can cause damage can it not?
